Heading down to the mid coast tomorrow. Just curious what topwater lures others like to use. I usually use a Top Dog by Mirrolure. what do y'all like to use?
orange or pink skitter walk. any skitterwalk, it is my favorite and the only top water I throw. and i throw a top 90% of the time i fish. the top water bite is on big time right now and has been for a while.I am not sure you'll get much of a topwater bite right now. I am taking some with me this weekend, but will have more Corkys, slow sinkers and some TSL Grasswalkers.
But for topwaters, I do like the One-Knockers and Baby Spooks, Bone, and Redfish patterns are my faves, but some Pink is always in my tackle box. Under certain conditions (choppy, dirty water or I know I am in a pig pen), I will also launch a SuperSpook.
I think it has more to do with what bait they are keying on, like shad over mullet, but even then that's a stretch. it's just an opportunity for them. If you put a topwater infront of them and they are in an aggressive enough move, even in 6-8 feet of water.. they'll eat it. SkitterWalks seem to work pretty well out over deep water, she dogs in dirty or rough water, superspooks when they are on Big Bait, or want a big bait. jr.s during the spring and summer. I have a small bass pro pencil that's great around glass minnows for some reason.. it's erratic. One knocker is my favorite all around.. bone or bone diamond get's it done more times than not, but the trout pattern and the oakie shad are solid. And yes, while not a topwater, the TSL - Grasswalker walks right under the surface and they'll eat it.. especially like the others have said..Has anyone noticed the fish in certain bay systems seem to prefer one type of topwater over another? For example, if I'm in POC/west matty spooks rein supreme. If I'm in east matty, it's skitterwalk time. Not saying the others won't work but my success rate is very different.
