It means no disrespect, just and old saying for us older guys.

 

I usually see it used with the 20-40 year old crowd. To me, shows disrespect and not used in our home!

I cringe when I hear people refer to their significant other as the old lady. It's gauche.

 

I don't use that term. Sounds disrespectful to me. But that's just my opinion.

 

It is disrespectful and low class. I bet the guys who say that about their wife never say it to her face.

I saw that post yesterday and bit my tongue, and decided not to comment, but I agree 100% with these two post. Very disrespectful.

 

Grew up with the term. Use it now with my wife. Just asked my wife if she cares if I called her my "ol' lady". She said, "No. Why?"

It's not really term used by us seniors.

I used to hear it mainly from bikers during the 60's and 70's.

I did ask my bride ( and i use my bride frequently ) when she turned 40 if I could now call her my old lady. There where repercussions.

I would say that 90% of the time I hear the expression it's more of a term of endearment - not a cutdown. (Though my wife would not be "endeared"!) I think the origin is '50s biker subculture.
