I have a 140 and it's a work horse. Not fast but pretty much maint free

 

they are great motors and extremely fuel efficient. The only down side is a friend of mine has a 50hp on his scooter and if there is floating grass he has to stop every 70-100 yards because his alarm goes off.

 

You can also research Nissan, as they are virtually the same (the might be identical). I'm fairly certain Longhorn Daddy has a Tohatsu, so maybe you could PM him.

 

Tothatsu and Nissan share some patients. iirc Tothatsu are the go to work horse in Japan but Nissan only allows up to a 115 into the US.

My T90 on a Baby Cat has never given me anything but great service. Think most of the BC owners with the T90 feel the same way. One person was having some quirk with his but afaik that was the only one.

Tran told me the only problem they may see is with the fuel injection- you need to drain the oil tank if you change brands of oil from Tothatsu. Oils are about the same but some of the dyes and fillers will not blend and clog the jets. Probably true of mixing oils in a lot of motors if they are not compatable at.

 

I don't know anything about their larger motors but every cajun in southern Louisiana has the 25 hp Mega on the back of their john boat. Everyone of my friends and relatives has one and they all rave about it's reliablity. Hope it helps

x2 plus what everyone else said. Great motors. BTW-Nissan outboards are made by Tohatsu and are identical except for the stickers and slight cost increase.

 

My neighbor has a 70, been running it 2-3 times a week for about 10 years, no problems.

These are great motors. Being a dealer i see quite a few and there are a few minor problems but thats with every motor. Mostly i see problems from lets say inexperience burnt water pumps, no oil, and such. But other than that they are great motors. If your in the market for a new one give me a shout and ill give you a great deal.

Tohatsu is by far the best outboard motor on the planet, that is unless you're a Tohatsu (Nissan) dealer. Since they seldom have any problems...dealers can't make any money on them...but they'll have very happy customers. I know from experience.

I am in Dallas attending the Tohatsu school. Only one word for these engines and that is reliable. What size of engine are you looking for?

I have a 25hp and it is awesome. On cold mornings 3-4 pulls to start. The only problem is that it takes me to all the places that do not have fish.

 

I talked to a dealer about Tohatsu and he told me world wide it's the number 1 selling brand. They have dominated the Asian market and they make motors for Nissan and small ones for many major manufacturers like Mercury. They also build & supply parts for many Manufacturers and share many patents with major outboard manufacturers.

 

Clearly more than 115 is allowed/sold in the US. Mine has a 140!

 

Extremely reliable with very low added maintenance when you perform the factory recommended maintenance.

I have a 2003 carbed 70 that has only given me one shop time problem when i mixed oil brands and it clogged the jets. I have noticed a gradual decrease in low end power over the years but it has always treated me right and never leftmme stranded.

If Tohatsu makes the HP you need, don't shop anywhere else.
