Sharing Fence Cost w/ Neighbor

What is a fair split when replacing a common wood fence with a neighbor? I have the "clean" side and the neighbor has the "back" side with the bracing, posts etc. 50/50, 60/40, 70/ 30, other?

Sections vary and I share the fence with three neighbors (two side neighbors and one in the back). I have two clean sides which are most visible that I would like to retain in the replacement . The other is mostly obstructed by my deck and some bushes so the back side doesn't bother me.

So I'm expecting to a pay a little more to retain the two clean sides and slightly less for the bracing side; just don't know what a fair split would be.

Personally, I always wanted the rail side facing my property. I could put nail-screws into the rails or posts
to hang plants or eye-lets for small dog chains. You can attach lattice to the rails for a cover up . Plus,
makes it a bit harder for people to look or climb over.
I once went 50-50 with a neighbor and although it made no difference to either of us, I took the rail side.
I`d talk to the neighbor first , some won`t pay for anything and still get a fence.

A guy I work with is going through this with his neighbor right now, the fence has been messed up since Ike but the neighbor is being a major tool about it.

Wait, are you saying that you actually have a neighbor that will split costs with you? Lucky you. I have a white trash neighbor who purchased the property next to me and I asked her if she wanted to split the cost of replacing a torn down chain link fence with a privacy fence, we split costs and I do all the labor, she said that if I wanted a new fence I should have to pay for it. I get frustrated because it is her dog that has been getting into my back yard, a very friendly boxer but it is still a pup, which is why I want to put up a new fence. Her yard looks like **** and every time I talk with her about it she says that if I don't like it then I should just fix it for her.

Back to your question: if it was me, split 50/50 and the one doing the labor would pick which side they wanted. If you are paying for labor then I have no idea how to determine who gets which side.

Have the pup impounded at the local pound each time it gets in and see if that will make her want to purchase a new fence. It cost money to get the dog out of jail, and if that does not work set traps that scare the dog to stay in it own territory. As for the trash I cannot help you here some people are just that way and some will not pay for anything. My ex neighbor was that way and I ended up fotting the bill. I stained mine so all the drips bled over on side and I purposely oversprayed. :)

Given any thought to the 'neighbor' fence? Every other picket is on the same side.

Of course its a problem with dogs, at least at my house it would be!
I personally like those types of fences. Only problem is most people have fences with other neighbors that already have a one sided fence so it is usually a no go if they are looking for continuity.

50/50 split for fence destroyed by Ike (back fence)..... then my other neighbor wants to split for the side fence - no damage, straight as can be, just not new like the other one..... That one was on her --- Must be nice to have enough money to replace a fence just because it does not exactly match the new one. Rail side for me (Security)

I got lucky!! I told the insurance agent about an experience where the neighbor had a hackberry tree(trash) growing up along the fence (on HER side) and when I offered to go in halvers with her to cut it down (we have 3, 50lb dogs) she said she wasn't paying anything but I was welcome to cut it down if I wanted to. Cost me $250 to have it taken out.

Well, the insurance adjuster paid me the entire cost of replacing the common fence. Nice guy! Of course, you could look at her yard and tell that she didn't spend any time taking care of it.

Maybe you can talk with the insurance agent and explain the situation to him and see if he'll do anything.

We have Traveler's insurance.

Adjuster asked me whose fence it was, and I truthfully told him I didn't know. He said since the smooth side was to me it must have been mine. He paid me for the whole thing, less depreciation. Anyway, my neighbor and I both have dogs, so we split 50/50, and I took the rail side. Like many others, I like to hang things from it.

Had fence damage on three sides. Both guys on either side paid their share of materials and pitched in labor. The English challenged woman behind me would not contribute at all.
I thought about leaving it open so my 95# lab could poop in her yard for a while, but instead took advantage of the free labor and fixed it anyway.

hope you have better neighbor than mine, he agreed to help pay half of the fence ad help build, built a fence 7' tall 2x12 treated bottom and 6' pickets all were treated material cost a small fortune and I payed for it all up front and it was finished of course he reniged on me. so needless to say he is not on my christmas card list.
