When the media reports started, the four swimmers spoke to U.S. State Department officials and they agreed to shut up. Almost immediately after the briefing, Lochte “walked across the street” and gave an interview to NBC where he told his side of the story, including the infamous anecdote about how he replied to a gun to his head by saying “Whatever.”

Lochte brought this on himself in more ways than one. Remember when he had his own reality TV show? Well he did.

By the way, I agree the guy should have kept his pie hole closed 100 percent. I just think the real story here has a lot to do with the Brazilians trying to lessen all the other black eyes they've gotten during the Olympics.

He should count himself lucky that Brazilian rent-a-cop did not pull the trigger. He could have done that and called it even with the cost of a stinky bathroom's door.

When travel abroad, learn and respect the local customs and laws -- they may be jungle laws to you, but it is their laws. We don't want to send another US$400 millions to bail you out.

They are hammered drunk. It’s 6:00 am. They stop at a convenience store to pee. They trash the restroom (wrong, even if your excuse is that you’re drunk). Store employees come out yelling in a language that they can’t understand. They try to leave. A guy with a gun is yelling at them and pointing it at them. They have no idea what they are saying, but the point comes across that they want money. They give them money and they are allowed to leave. In their drunken state, is it restitution or robbery? Are they even sure? Somebody pointing a gun at you demanding money could very well be construed as robbery.

best thing he could do is say he messed up. Got hammered drunk, acted foolish and is sorry. Pay for all repairs, say sorry again and ask for forgiveness.

He is not very smart. Ever listen to an interview with him? I can't believe has dumb he is.
The guy is dumber than a soup sandwich. Phelps is about as stupid as a human being can get, but even Phelps can stay out of jail in Brazil. If there was gold medal for stupid, phelps gets it, Lochte gets the silver. But if there a medal for imbecilic conduct, Lochte gets the gold.

Saw a guy in Cozumel bump into a cab accidentally and knock the mirror off. Cops and cabbies immediately surrounded him. He was headed to jail. Gave them the money in his wallet and literally the shoes off his feet and was free to go on partying. That's the way it goes in those countries. Lucky they didn't end up in jail or dead.

who cares?
these kids have dedicated more time and hard work to their sport than any of us has to anything. give them a pass for blowing it out hard after they finish their olympic careers.
it's what kids do and in their cases, i'm sure they don't have a ton of practice partying.

Blowing it out is fine, but damaging property is inexcusable. Looks like they were being a-holes and now they are paying for it. I don't feel bad for them. Should have just kept their mouths shut and moved on.

None of the four is under 18. Are people over 20 still considered as kids and expect to behave like kids and punks ?

They were lucky they did not get shot.

In October 1992, a 16-years old Japanese exchange student, Mieko Hattori, and his American brother came knocking on the door of a home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they thought hosting the Halloween party they were invited to. The homeowner, Rodney Peairs, shot Hattori at point blank range with a .44 mag and killed him on the front yard. Hattori was 130 lbs and dressed as John Travolta in Saturday Night fever. Peairs was 6'2".

Peairs was acquitted in a trial that lasted 7 days.

Lochte is not the sharpest tack in the box. Typical exaggerated story youngsters tell. He did get out without paying a bribe. Don't care what they call it.

Dumb Americans

No wonder the locals continue to boo and whistle in a derogatory manner whenever an athlete from the U.S. competes. They even boo the poor horses in the equestrian events. Ugly Americans up close and personal thanks to these spoiled "old enough to know better" brats!

They also boo'd and jeered just about everyone else aswell including their own people.

ok, so I know every one of you gets p'd off when you see places like Ferguson burning to the ground and people making wild assumptions...lets wait for the rest of the facts to come out.
They obviously broke in to the bathroom and then lied about it, but the Brazilian Authorities aren't telling the whole story either. I have seen the tapes probably 10 times on the news and I wonder, 1) Why were the swimmers sitting on the ground unless forced to at gunpoint? 2) How did the guards know how much the damages would be? 3) The damages were what they had on them, coincidence? 4) why isn't the taking of all your money at gunpoint robbery? Maybe they were robbed, just not how they say. From all of the gas station bathrooms I have been in, there not a lot of vandalism you can do.

This.

Just another shake down by a third world country and their crooked cops.

I believe they were 'robbed' in a sense by the guards and store employee. Used a little damage and threat of trouble to extort them out of their money that night. Their story is probably what they felt like happened but certain details left out thinking it would never reach this level. If the Brazilian authorities extorted $10,000 as fine publicly to give them their passports back, can you imagine what happens on the streets to all foreigners. Nobody wants to get stuck in a prison down there for any amount of time. Between the money that was taken that night and the fine, they probably can build a new store much less fix a broken mirror and door knob.

They destroyed property, refused to pay, Got a little Brazilian justice, paid up and were released. Sounds likes a fair deal to me.

Lochte was too excited, probably felt like a bad a** having a gun pointed at him, and couldn't keep his mouth shut. Couldn't tell the truth because it would make him look bad, but it was too good of a story to keep to himself, so he stretched the truth.

If this happened in the US, Texas for that matter, and the store clerk or security actually shot them, bet there is a good chance they wouldn't be charged for shooting.

Do you know of a service station in the US that has three or four armed security guards round the clock? I doubt it .
