Reel restoration projects

Recently I acquired a cu-100b with a super free spool, not the normal whiffle spool like on the cu-100bsf models but the spool like in the dsv's. after fishing it a few times I decided to supertune it for ultimate cast ability and replace the stock drag

I purchased the entire bearing restoration kit from Boca bearings and tore it apart and rebuilt it, cleaning it internally to the point it looks brand new. I replaced the drag with the SMOOooooOoth drag system by carbontex, hence the name its very smooth

As you can see I installed the orange seal ABEC 7 bearings. This reel is now so smooth and so quiet I can't believe it's the same one I started working on.

Even more recently after having much success from my cu-100 I decided to try an older bantam chronarch so I found one on eBay for around 105. Did the same thing, tore it apart, cleaned it and replaced all 3 spool bearings. This one I decided not to replace the other 3 bearings because after degreasing them I found that they were still in great shape because they were totally encased in grease by the previous owner sealing them from any debris

I'm going to replace the stock drag in this one as well next week when I can decommission it for a few days.

This reel was so dirty when I got it in the mail, it looked like the previous owner just threw grease and sprayed wd40 inside the reel and hoped for the best, this chronarch is the most solidly built shimano from the bantam series I've seen yet and I can't wait to take it on the water

I don't know what the point of this post was other than I wanted to brag about how awesome my new toys are, and to thank the people at Boca Bearings for their great customer service

As soon as I can get my hands on a ch50 mg I'll be supertuning that as well, with a video to go along with it for bearing replacement and reel cleaning.

Thanks for checking out this post and let me know if you have any questions regarding reel maintenance or upgrading of components

I can't tell from the picts, but it looks like the brass brake ring is still corroded. Get some fine metal polish and a rag/cutip and clean up the inside of it. It will give the brakes a more smooth surface.

That 100A looks very clean. Nice reel.

And the fine metal polish is what works best? I stripped the spool shaft of all the old oil and grease with acetone, let it dry and got it to a nice shine, I wasn't sure if using any chemicals or anything would have an adverse effect on my new ceramic bearings

You can use 2500 grit sand paper to take the burrs off of the spool shaft only where it makes contact with the pinion. I then take a q-tip an cut in half with side cutters and strip a little cotton off of the end and dip in either semichrome or flitz and run on a dremel on the I'd of the pinion gear then clean out the excess and debris. Then get a paper towel and put a small line of the same of the two polishes that you used and put the short end of the spool shaft in te dremel and run the long end of the shaft in the paper towel folded over until it gets warm, then go to a clean part while still running to clean all excess off. Then your spool shaft and id of the pinion are tuned. Use the other half of the q-tip with the same polish in a dremel to polish the brake ring. Your reel will run smoother. You can polish but do sand where the bearing goes. Hope this helps. Can't let too many tricks of the trade out but if you need more help or are local to Alvin pm me and we can hook up and help you out.

Shimano never made a 100bsf model with a whiffle spool, only the 100b and you are correct it was a super free reel. It's a sweet little reel, especially when supertuned.

Like george said, supertuning is just more than changing out bearings and cleaning the reel. removing all corrosion from friction contact points is the key. Other areas you might want to look at polishing up are the brake pin shafts, brass spacers, and handle shafts. basically any brass part on the reel. Make sure after you polish up those brake pins and put the brakes back on, put a amall drop of oil on each pin. I love that CU100b mold of reel. IMO its my favorite...Dip
