We were 16 when our first potatoe gun was built specifically for surf fishing.
After several shots a small crowd formed watching us, that's when the Crystal Beach po po showed up and told us it was equilavent to firing a shotgun on the beach.
He confiscated it from us and drove off.
That was 20 years ago.....

Love it. I built one back in college... never thought about using it as a casting implement.
