Hate to keep starting threads but I have a legit question

At the storage where we keep our boat, theres a possum trapped in a possum trap.. First time I saw it there was on Monday afternoon when I went to get the boat. I just dropped the boat back off just now and hes still in there alive but hes shaking and you can tell something ain't right with it. I called the owner of the storage but he hasnt answered, even walked up to his door and knocked but hes not home.

Not really sure what to do, I dont want to let him out because hes ****** off when I walk up to him, and hes not my business to be messing with. I hate those things, but I just hate to see any animal be trapped in a cage and not be taken to be released somewhere else ethically. I dont think its intentional but I dont believe the owner had checked the trap. I almost want to call animal control but I'm not sure, what do yall think? Thanks

I don't want to mess with it. Like I said when I walk up to it it opens its mouth and gets mad, I'm not putting myself at risk. The guy is in his mid 80s so I'm going to guess he just doesn't remember setting it

Man, I can't believe anybody would trap an opossum. I've had them in my area as long as I've lived there and let them be. I get that you have no business telling the owner not to do it, but if he's just leaving it there to die F him, let it out.

They are not pests. They are ugly and can be irritating when they get a dog riled up in the middle of the night but leave them be and they do no harm.

We always set traps for stray cats at the cat rescue. Often had possums or raccoons get trapped. Let the animal out. It’s scared, hungry, and stressed. Tonight’s temps will drop to low 30’s.

From what I've experienced with opossums, they're mostly all show. Granted, I wouldn't want one to clamp down on me but he's not likely to attack you if you open the cage. I'd be more afraid of a raccoon being aggressive after being released.

Get some welding gloves and put the cage with the possum in it in the bed of your truck, drive to a remote place a couple miles away, and release it. Whoever set the trap probably had the same intentions, otherwise they would have set out poison to kill it. They are good animals in that they eat insects and generally bad things we don't like, but I really don't like them around the house...we live on an old golf course so there's 40 acres just outside our backyard property line. When I see them in the lights at night I chase them until they either start to climb a tree or corner up somewhere to square off and hiss. I distract them with one hand while grabbing their tail with the other. Once you get them upside down they can't get at you, but will hiss and carry on. I walk them 100 yards or so to some trees and let them climb it or will walk another 100 yards to the drainage ditch and release them...just depends on weather and mood...

They eat my cat's food so I catch them regularly and relocate them to some woods a few miles away. They show their teeth but I've never had one try to attack me. Either release it where it is or relocate it.

Set my possum free!

Put on some gloves and let him out. He won't do anything to you. He will likely sit there and look stupid. You may have to tip the cage to make him slide out. Also I've never seen a possum run. I have several in my yard under a shed. They keep all sorts of unwanted stuff away from my house. Glad to have them.
I've caught them in a cage before. They were not aggressive at all, just scared.

Do the right thing.

Thank you!! Best to free them where you catch them. That way they know where to go for shelter, which he or she will need tonight and is probably in someone's garage  Hope the thing makes it.

Owner may well have been trying to trap cats...

For future reference, they will chew stuff up. I had my boat in a commercial storage building a few years back. I had custom seat covers made for a couple of my pedestal seats (vinyl) so that they would match the rest of my boat. A possum got in and chewed just a chunk out of the two new seats, just enough to make them unusable.

my neighbor knows about that well , chewed up stuff all under his house, we started trapping and first year got 18, 16 the next and around 14 every year after last 6 years or more, you would not believe all those in galveston, the animal control here will come get them, i need to start setting it again soon

A few possums are not a problem but a lot of them can be a problem. Trapped 14 in the last 5 or 6 months. New subdivision was built behind and next to my house. I can be sitting at my fire pit at night and look at the 8 foot fence and see possums yes possums ( 2 or 3 ) looking over the fence at me. When you have a lot of them around and they want to use your yard for a place to relieve them selves it will smell like a cats litter box. They will dig under the fence and then the cats come when they find out there is a passage way. I guess I will get a dog. Been wanting a dog for a couple years now. The ***** are smart enough to only come around after I come back from fishing. Heck there is one **** that I have caught 4 times and when released it will hang around for a while. As mentioned before the possum usually will not hurt you. I have had them sit in a cage a few minutes until I walk out of sight before it will leave the trap.

Of all the critters I run into around here, be it skunks, raccoons, armadillos, squirrels, and 'possums, the possum is the one I'm least concerned about. They are the most benign. They are crazy easy to catch by hand. Sure, they put up a good front with the hissing and teeth barring, but swat 'em a few times with a broom, and they'll just roll over and play dead. They love copperhead snakes! Cockroaches, too.

We are letting our opossums go when we live catch them ( eat bugs and don’t really cause problems) ***** and feral cats DRT
I had a guy leave some wild hogs in his trap till they died, he was really disgruntled when
Asked to pack up his stuff and leave the ranch because of it
