Got a new horse trailer w living quaters and looking into getting a portable generator for it. It has very basic electronic.

AC/DC converter for the lights
fresh water pumps for shower/sink
tiny fridge
micowave
13.5BTU Air Conditioner
22" TV/DVD

I was told if I use a generator withOUT an "INVERTER" it would blow all my electrical components. I have, in the past used non inverter portables to power house, deer camp etc and never had problems but this is my 1st trailer like this and I dont want to tear up something so new.

The only advantage to an inverter is that the engine RPM can adjust to the load. Under light load, the engine is able to slow way down and still maintain the voltage. That makes it use less fuel and make less noise. I have over 1200 hours on the Onan on my RV and it's non inverter. It runs at a constant 3600 RPM. If you are going to put your generator on the roof of that trailer like most guys do, the inverter generator will be a lot quieter. I have a 2000 Watt Honda that's an inverter and under light load, you can barely hear it run.

MOnt,

Will that 2000w Honda be capable of kicking the AC on a RV type trailer? I understand with the noise. Good thing I have a 100' 30amp cord :)

Im just trying to figure out a way to power this thing as economical as possible because we will not use it that often. Maybe a dozen times a year.

generator

i run both of my rv's off a craftsman 5600 watt generator all the time with no problems. to my understanding all the inverter does is change the ac current to dc allowing you to use all your 12 volt dc lights etc. without draining your batteries. I could be wrong. What kind of trailer did you get, planning on getting one next year.

I used to have a 23' Minnie Winnie motorhome with a 3500 watt generator. Don't recall the brand. I could run the AC and one other appliance - hair dryer or coffee pot or whatever, but that was it. Times probably have changed. That was in 1978 when I bought the rig new.

I use a Champion 3500. It runs my a/c quite well. They arent as quiet as the Honda, but at my deer lease, every one elses generator is twice as loud as mine. The Champion is priced right at $300 or so. I bought mine several years ago and had to order on line. Recently I've seen them at Lowes Tractor supply and Sams
They also come with the R/V style 110 outlet. Just plug n go!
