October is now my favorite month of the year for the surf on the upper coast. I like May to when the weed is not to bad. We usually do not catch as many sharks in October as we do in the summer, but man the reds and jacks are thick on good days. The water gets a little chilly around late October on the upper coast. If it is sandy the reds are usually in and co-operating, and on green days big schools of jacks come crashing by once in a while. After all these years, big jacks are my favorite fish to catch in the surf. Pound for pound, they are the best fighters no doubt. Love the ones in the 20-25 pound range, and they will hit spoons and bucktail jigs like crazy when they are bustin. I like May if the weed aint to bad because it seems like you catch those super extra large reds then bigger than the average bull reds you catch in the fall and the sharks start showing up then as well. If I could fish the surf 2 months a year it would be May and October.
