Ok, I will be camping and fishing for a week at Matagorda Bay RV park next week. I have never been there, and would like to know If there is a draw bridge, or if there is a bridge to the island. Also if there is any good restaurants in Matagorda or in the surrounding area. One more thing. How is the surf fishing on the beach at the park, or is the fishing better in the river, or at the pier. Thanks

If you wade around the mouth of the river be carefull. The current can really rip through there at times.

Resturants:
Spoon Bill's 979-863-7766 very good food and quiet.
River Bend 979-863-7481 good food but dont go if your in a hurry.
Waterfront 979-863-2520 Located in the harbor.
Burger Boat- located north side of the swing bridge.
Light House BBQ 979-863-2328 About 4 miles N-of Matty.

Also.....the Shell gas station on your right as you come into town cooks breakfast and burgers. The place is called " The Birds Nest " They will also custom cut you a Ribeye if you want to do some grill'n at your campsite.Tell them to cut you a " NOO NOO " steak ! LOL...and be prepared for a 1 3/4" steak !

And the "REEF" is just past Riverbend on your right.Faster sevice than Riverbend.IMHO Their hamburgers are awesome aswell !

The mouth of the river with lights is a good start. Caught lots of fish (trout, smacks, reds) this way. Piggy perch on a hook for reds, shrimp or plastics for Trout. Be careful of the rip tide current and thick sand---4x4.

If you can you can also try 2mile cut which is about two miles down the beach, take a left and you are into some marshes of east bay. I never have great luck here but manage to scratch a fish or two.

Not sure how far down but it is a pretty good way there is the shell beach which drops fast and it is solid oyster shell, you will know it when you hit it. Catch lots of red fish here in the surf.

If you have lights, you can catch a lot of fish off the fishing pier closest to the mouth of the river. Get site # 12, 13, 14, 15 and run an extension cord from your site to the pier. Fishing usually best after 10PM. There's a great red fish hole on the west end of the east jetty. Fairly safe wading in that area. Do NOT wade in the mouth of the river. Extremely dangerous rip currents in that area. Fresh cut mullet works best for good sized sand trout and reds in the mouth of the river. Just fish off the end of the sand bar closest to the west jetty. I fish that area a lot and have a great time.
Weekends are a good time to go somewhere else to get away from the pwc crowd. Try the onion rings and chicken strips and gravy at River Bend. Their slow but well worth the wait.
BTW, a 100 ft extension cord and a couple of 500 watt contractor lights will work well off the pier
