Louisiana Limit Change

Well, it appears Texas isn’t the only state with some concern over dwindling numbers of speckled trout. Our neighbors to the east of us, passed legislation Tuesday in regards to their speckled trout.
Come Nov. 20, the new Louisiana speckled trout limit will be 15 fish per day and 13-20 inches in length. You will be allowed two fish more than 20 inches per day that count against your bag limit. In other words, one can keep 13 fish 13-20 inches and have two fish more than 20 inches for a total of 15 fish. Charter boat guides and crew will not be able to keep their limit while on a guided trip, but can still fish.

In addition to speckled trout, the redfish limit could change, but the proposal as written was unacceptable. The proposal could pass, if amended to a more favorable limit of four fish 18-27 inches in length with no over-sized reds allowed. No guide limits would be allowed, while on a charted trip.

I’ll keep you posted if the proposal passes. The proposal as presented included a three-fish limit, 18-24 inches, no over-sized, and no guide or crew limits allowed while on a charter.

It really does not affect the west side of the state much. 12” to 13” no big deal. Two over 20” is acceptable. We were already at a 15 fish limit so no changes there. The removal of the guide limit is what has so many guides upset. I don’t think clients care. 90% of my business came from Texas and they were way more conservation minded than people from Louisiana. We will see if it improves our fisheries. Our biggest problem over here has been over harvest of oysters, erosion, and silting caused by ship channel modifications. There are some projects that could fix that and if done, our fishery would explode regardless of what the limits are.
