Jetties in a pontoon?

Do you guys think it's safe this time of the year to venture to the jetties in a 24' pontoon? Also how deep is the water around the boat cut so I know how much anchor rope I'll need?

I'd bring more than 40' of rope. 80 to 100 is better unless you're anchoring right on the rocks. Depending where you want to be, it can be 20' deep in places. Also, 5 foot of chain to get it down and hold. Current can be strong. Pick your day and watch for ship wakes when running. Launch from the dike, or Galveston Yacht club.

Thanks guys, I've been talking about going for a long time now! I guess I'm a little scared because my folks hate the fact of me going down there and have filled my head with the idea that salt water boating is to dangerous and and a waste of time and horrible on a boat!!!! I totally DISAGREE, I love salt water fishing and Im sure i will love it even more once I get off land and hit the open ocean!!!!

Errr...
That pontoon can be fine, unless it isn't made for saltwater use.

If it's a painted trailer, that is going to cause issues right off the bat.
If it's a wood floor, the screws that secure deck to frame will rust out quick.
The wiring under the deck will rust out quick if they are just plain butt connectors.

And never forget that **** is a empty sack of chips on the water, very easy to be blown around, so always factor that in.

Mr -

I would search old posts about this issue, I seem to remember a thread about problems with pontoons at the jetty/rougher water. A nosedive into a wave is what I remember.
Same thing happened to a buddy of mine and his dad in their 24 foot pontoon boat. Tried to go around the end of the Sabine jetty and started taking water over the front of the boat. They made it back but they never fished the jetties again.

My trailer is galvanized, and all the bolts and screws are ss. The being blown around thing is my concern, but my anchor has held me in about a 3' chop at lake livingston! The other thing about water coming over the bow isn't an issue because the water will run off!!!

Watch if bigger more capable boats are going out. Then decide, if you don't feel good outside the jetties, fish inside and make a day of it. Better to feel safe inside, than wonder how you will get back in. 3 foot at the jetties is too much for a pontoon.

I fish the Jetties in a 22 ft deck boat regularly. My boat is aluminum and has a very shallow hull. Be careful rounding the jetties if you fish outside and don't get to close to the rocks because you can blow around quickly. Take waaayyy more than 40 ft of rope. You want to make sure the boat can take a large wake and not take any water on board. And I agree with the 6 ft of chain as mentioned above. You might get some funny looks but once you are set up you will have the most comfortable rig out there. Good luck and catch a bunch. Best advice I ever got is that if I get in trouble throw the anchor out first thing.
