Mantis

I have caught one of these at POC. It was about ten inches long. Cut up, made good bait.

 

A Florida guide told me they live in a burrow in the sand. One guy was wading barefoot and stepped over the burrow, and the mantis shrimp punched a hole in his foot. They're mean. Article about the one in the photo said it was 18 inches long and was released. Doh!

 

They have the most powerful punch for their size.

 

You catch them using 14" specks as bait.

 

If you've ever read studies about mantis shrimp. The normal ones have a club for an arm and can literally hit you with the energy of a .22

 

Now that's, some mean ceviche!

Apparently they are considered a delicacy and are said to be like very tender lobster.
