The snare is a killing machine, but it does not discriminate. Hogs, deer, coyotes, cows and calves all choke out the same.

 

I've read you can put "stops" on the cable so it won't tighten enough to hold a deer.

 

I have been snaring for a long while and that doesn't make total since to me because you don't always catch perfectly around the neck of the animal. A deer could wiggle through and get caught in the abdomen pretty easy; actually I catch a lot of yotes in this area. I would recommend only using snares for predator control along fence lines and not a hog problem. Not to mention you would have to attach the snare to a telephone pole in case you caught hogzilla. I know people have done it, but I would be scared what the by-catch was...

 

Look at snareshop.com, you cant build them that cheap. Check snares frequently, or take them up if you cant because you will catch other game that can usually be released unharmed

I've used them for hogs traveling on paths/trails under a fence line. I have also unintentionally snared deer and turkey. Hogs will eventually change their paths/trails. Stops only work on legs so when you hang the snare from the bottom fence wire they really don't help. Some deer get free and some get snared around the abdomen. If they don't choke out or break their neck you can set them free. I quit using them after the hogs started coming through an unfenced side of my property. Hogs will break them and can take down the fence trying to get free. If you have a bad hog problem they really won't help much since you only catch one at a time. Just my dos centavos!

 

On the fences , you can determine If deer are using and use brush to deter deer - most jump , not crawl over a fence. Not a 100% science but I've had more deer in hog traps than snares . You can put snare smaller and lower to avoid deer

A buddy on the lease has two of these but has only set them out twice so far. So no feedback, but they are supposed to be good.

 

Keep them low to the ground so you don't snare deer or cattle. They do work.

 

Just be careful and use stout snares. 1 large hog will rip your fence down. I have vast personal experience with this. I've seen a 250 boar take down 40 yards of net wire fence, it has the strength the rip the ties off your t-posts, and the only thing that will stop it is where it is tied to a concreted in post. I do not recommend this method. It'll definitely create some major headaches unless your only catching small hogs. But where there's small hogs, there's large hogs.
