Spent most of Monday night in the ER waiting to get this thing cut out. Was in there about an inch. Lots of ice, Advil, and antibiotics and my hand is just now useable again.

Longer it stays in the worse it feels

If this happens to anyone, I recommend ripping it out asap ..... then soak in hot water and or seek medical .....

9parts HOT water and 1part bleach is what poison control recommend for my stingray hit

hot water took away the sting immediately - end up being to hot and caused a burn on the skin ....but dman it felt good

I tried pulling it out. It wasn’t moving. Stayed in there about an hour before I got to the ER. Not a good time. The ER doc put me in a tub of hot water with Batadine. Good stuff. That helped. Went home and continued to soak in water and Batadine. Hand still throbbed all night when I went to bed though.

Was in Baffin a few years ago and did something I never do and paid for it ... went to put my foot on a really lively hard head ... just as he turned and had no way of stopping what I was doing with any kind of leverage ... picked my foot up and that sob was stuck to the bottom of my foot through my shoe (ok, it was just a crock) and I had to really kick that sob to get him off ... hurt like he77 for a few then after about 1/2 hour was ok enough to fish some more ... slowly poured a can of beer on it and was fine after that but still got the punctured spot showing on the bottom of my foot ...

Buddy stomped on one down when we were shark fishing near port Mansfield. Stomped on it with his redwings, missed the sole by an inch and it pierced the leather at the inside of his foot arch so he couldn't take his boot off because fish was stuck!

When I was around 15 I had the whole spine in the side of my hand. Had to cut it off flush with the flesh. Luckily it was a fresh water cat and didn't sting as much. I remember the Doc had one heck of a time pulling it out. My hand was numb but I could feel the meat tearing as he pulled to remove barb.

I recall being about 16 years old and caught a hard head. I recall telling myself, "It's time to Man Up" and put your hands on the fish and take it off the hook. That fish stuck me, and for 42 years I have never touched another hard head.

Hardhead Horror Story

My hardhead horror story happened about 50 years ago. My friend, Donnie, and I were sportsman shrimping at San Leon. Donnie was cleaning out the catch when he threw a hardhead up in the air. It landed and stuck in my left shoulder blade. My shoulder was paralyzed. Donnie then reached to remove it from my shoulder and it stuck him in his left hand.

Later that night Donnie hand swelled up so much, he had to go the emergency room and they had to cut off his wedding ring.

To this day if I touch that area on my shoulder blade it hurts.

Until I got stuck by one, I always thought people were exaggerating about how bad getting finned by a hardheaded could be. I got popped by one in the palm if my right hand while surf fishing years ago. It made me nauseous immediately. Within a short amount of time, the pain gravitated all the way to my shoulder. As mentioned by others hot water eased the pain. I went to the doc for antibiotics the next day. My hand was useless for a couple of weeks. The aching and stiffness stuck with me for a good while longer. Havent touched one since and also now keep a bottle of Dawkins solution (diluted bleach) on the boat just in case.

Fat Foot

Last year night fishing in Port Aransas I hooked one of those bastard fish. I tried to shake it off my hook and it flipped upside down and its barb went through my wadding boot. When I tried to pull it off it was stuck so hard in my foot I really had to pull hard to remove the fish. Bled it out best I could and when I returned home pumped antiseptic in the hole.
My foot swelled up for three days before I could walk on it. I didn't like hardheads before now I hate them.
