Getting a title for a free boat?

Hoping someone can help me out, I recently was given a boat by a wealthy man that just wanted the boat gone. I took the boat to later find out that the motor is locked up and it is in rough shape, hull is structurally sound but apolstery is shot. I found a gentlemen that will take the boat off my hands, but after trying to get the title from the man that gave it to me, I found out that he never received a title as he bought the boat for ex son in law that he longer associates with (this took place years ago and the boat has been sitting for about 7 years). He told me that he has no idea who the titled owner is. My question is how can I get a title on this boat so I can sell it? Thanks in advance.

That sounds like an awfully suspicious story from your benefactor. I would suggest you go to the courthouse and have them do a title search. There will be a fee and you might find out the actual owner wants his property back. But, nobody can register the boat without one. Doing otherwise is just asking for trouble.

you have to go to a txpw office [not the court house they no longer deal with watercraft] with the tx #s and they will tell you the person its titled to then you can try to contact them and they will have to fill paper work out for a lost tiltle after they get it they can sign it over to
