do any of you get this, it seems to get in my chest on the right side and I mean it hurts something awful. All I ate for breakfast today was a bagel and about a hr later I had to eat 3 Pepsid and drink a Dr Pepper. I was dying here

Never happened until I got older and now i get it quite often, I've even cut back my beer drinking to week ends (unless at the deer camp or fishing). Sometimes at night which wakes me up.

anyone have a remedy for this ?

It could be your gall bladder acting up. Get that checked out for sure.

If it isn't your gall bladder, try OTC Prilosec. One a day works wonders. I have a small hiatal hernia that causes me to have acid reflux. It's so bad I feel the acid in the back of my neck, a real burning sensation.

Go to a gastrointerologist and have the scope procedure that they put down your throat and into your stomach (you'll be sedated and it won't bother you). That procedure can help rule out any REALLY bad stuff, and they can take a small biopsy to check for the bacteria that causes ulcers. If you have that bacteria, they can put you on antibiotics to clear it up.

If you're on a mail-in Rx plan, your doctor can prescribe a generic drug for Prevacid (I don't think there's a generic for Prilosec yet) and it's less expensive.

Life is SO much better without the excessive heartburn!

Hey Neck....

If it feels like a HOT IRON POKER going through the upper right part of your chest from back to front it could be the GALL BLADDER...

My wife just had an emergency GB operation one month before we had our new girl. Those were her symptoms... you will find it will only get worse and not better. Go have it checked out now. If you need a DR recommendation there is a HECK OF A DR. up here at Memorial Herman The Woodlands. He did an incredible job.

You will progress to not being able to eat or drink anything like she did... don't let it go that far it wasn't fun watching the pain she was in.

Good Luck..

I went through that amigo. Even went to the ER a couple of times. I chewed Rolaids and Tums like crazy for years. It turns out that I have GERD Gastroesophageal reflux disease. I was on Nexium, and such but it didn't work and the gas kep building and building. Finally I went to a specialist. The first specialist was an idiot but the second knows his business. To make sure it was only GERD, they did a CT scan (dye sucks), x-rays, blood work and an endoscopy. With the endoscopy, they found I have severe erosion (stage 3 or so) and a couple of acute ulcers. Now, this WILL turn into cancer unless they "wrap" the esophagus which they will do in a couple of weeks. I was in so much pain before that I was on darvacet constantly. Anyhoo, the doc put me on a med called protonics (sp?) which has done an absolute incredible job.

So, with that being said, depending on how long you've had this problem, get a good gastro doc to do a complete work up. Make sure your esophagus lining isn't eroded because as I said, once it reaches the later stages, it WILL (no question) turn into cancer. Mine was caught just in time.

Don't sit around and chew rolaids and tums thinking it's nothing. Get it checked out thoroughly at the very least.

I used to take protonix and it was wonderful .. but then my insurance decided to drop all PPIs and H2 blockers .. so i went back to tums and rolaids .. but then i found out all the extra calcium from the antiacids were helping me make kidney stones a little faster than i wanted ...

so now i've gone to plain 'ole baking soda and water .. best solution so far .. it's instant .. not half as nasty or thick as the liquid antiacids like mylanta ... and it only costs $.69 for a years worth of medicine

I take a Prilosec EVERY morning...literally...EVERY-freaking-morning. If I forget to take it...I know it around lunch-time. I get acid-reflux/heartburn something FIERCE!!

It takes a few days to become effective, but after that it stops all signs of acid reflux completely...unless you forget to take it.

food entering and leaving the stomach must pass through two sphincters, or openings. these sphincters are openings that are surrounded by a ring of muscles that contract or relax to open and close the sphincter. the cardiac sphincter controls food and liquid passing from the esophagus to the stomach, and the pyloric sphincter controls chyme (partially digested food and liquid)passing from the stomach to the small intestine.

as we age, the muscles controlling these sphincters do not work quite as well as they did in our youth, which may not allow the muscles to contract completely, and this can allow stomach contents - especially the hydrocloric acid in the stomach - to enter into the esophagus, which in turn causes the burning and discomfort you know as heartburn, or gastrointestinal reflux.

Doesn't the Dr Pepper make it worse?
yes, because of the acid content, which lowers the ph of the stomach contents even more. the high acid content of soft drinks (primarily, phosphoric acid) also contributes heavily to tooth decay. one of the worst things for your overall health that people consume on a daily basis is soft drinks. soft drinks also contain roughly one teaspoon of sugar per ounce of soft drink.
