The Meaning(s) of Hooah.

Hooah (who-ah), adj. U.S. Army or Marine Slang. Referring to, or meaning anything and everything except "no." Generally used when at a loss for words. Also:

1. Good copy, solid copy, roger, good or great; message received, understood.

2. Glad to meet you, welcome.

3. I do not know, but will check on it, I haven't the vaguest idea.

4. I am not listening.

5. That is enough of your drivel--sit down.

6. Stop sniveling.

7. You've got to be kidding.

8. Yes.

9. Thank you.

10. Go to the next [briefing] slide.

11. You have taken the correct action.

12. I don't know what that means, but am too embarrassed to ask for clarification.

13. That is really neat, I want one too.

14. Amen.

I think the Marine version is "oorah!" A subtle but distinct difference.

I think it pretty much fits the same definitions with the addition of "here, hold my beer and watch this! OORAH!"

Oh, and OOH-RAH was not derived from the Army's hooah.
actually oorah as well as hooah all came from HUA which actually stands for
I Hear you, I Understand you, and i Acknowledge you

and as an army ranger i am obligated to tell marines, navy, airforce or anyone else, that RANGERS LEAD THE WAY and all you other guys just FOLLOW!!!

well in responce to that rangers wanted to be marines, no i think it is more rangers where to smart to go into the marines. the ranger school has the second highest wash out rate behind only the seals and IMO the seals wash rate is because they get alot of people who want the glory and the glamor that has been holywoodised. (is that a word lol)

and for all those marines that are offended, relax its all in good fun right???

anyone who served has my total respect.
some just more then others, lol just kidding.

No idea what the real origins of "hooah" is, but here's a funny possiblity:

Soldiers on a remote atoll during WWII were ordered to launch an attack on a neighboring island and responded to the vague radio message by saying, "Who, us?"

This was interpreted on the other end of the shaky radio connection as being a motivated "HOOAH!!!" The soldiers went on to successfully attack the nearby island and a new exclamation was born.

Why are you telling my girlfriend goodnight? :hairout:
ruh-roh.

To qualify my experience, let me say that I spent 9 years in the US Army.

Having said that, Chesty Puller was one of the most highly decorated and downright highly capable men the US MILITARY has ever had the privilege to call their own.

Having said THAT, too bad he didn't go Army- but I don't hold it against him.

yeah there are a ton of those stories.
there is the one where the C O orders the men of the 2nd rangers up the cliffs at normandy and the squad leader says WHO US with a heavy accent...
or the one same story but some infintry men in africa

i like them all but the truth is it came from HUA which in basic we learned the airforce is the only ones still using it that way. and we also learned it stood for Head Up Arse with a couple other letters inplace of the rse.
