2019 Gulf Red Snapper Season

Fall Reopening: The red snapper recreational season will reopen in Gulf state and federal waters on the following Saturdays and Sundays: Oct. 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, and 27.

This season will apply to private recreational anglers in state and federal waters, and to state for-hire operations in state waters only.

The 2019 red snapper recreational season in Gulf state and federal waters was open June 11 through July 12.

I think Texas is the only Gulf state that keeps state water open year round. So I don't see them following suit, but you never know. I would suspect they would if the numbers are lower than they expect from state water, but that might not be until next spring. I don't know when the fiscal year is for snapper counts. Is it calendar year or June to May?

Texas shall reopen the season too. Having full year open in areas where you may catch a couple of keepers in one full day is worthless.

I disagree about the couple keepers for a full day. There are plenty of legitimate statewater snapper spots.

And I disagree about giving up our state season, respectfully of course.

If and ONLY if TPWD stays in charge of the red snapper in federal waters think it would be best to have a state water season for down south. But I would agree that I would like to see a longer federal water season for upper Texas coast and would be willing to give up the state water season for part of the year if it would make it happen.

Or a radical idea that would work to keep all of Texas fishing would be set different depth limits for different parts of the state year around. I think TPWD could minimize the impacts to spawning red snapper by changing the depths that snapper could be kept each 1/4 of the year.

Or slot limits. This could limit the poundage caught since this is how it is measured and allow for longer season while still leaving most the large sows. One over 20" or 22" or whatever and one under per person or something along those lines. Would support slot limits for red snapper with the season we have now as long at the limit allowed to keep one large snapper per person.

There is a lot of flexibility for TPWD as long as they get to keep calling the shots on Red Snapper. Would expect some changes to get the most fishing days for Texas fishermen for red snapper.

I'd say extremely unlikely. Remember, TX only got 6.2% of the recreational TAC when the allocations were established for the season. It hardly seems appropriate since we have about 22% of the coastline of the GOM and everything I read says that mud bottom is great for red snapper.
Per their recording techniques, we caught our portion of the TAC, and the season was closed.
AL has had a couple of weekends added since per the records they did not catch their portion of the TAC. (they got 26.3% of the TAC, despite only 53 miles of coastline).

Do you (or anyone else) know for sure how the TAC got divided up ?
Will Texas P&W be able to get more of the TAC in the future ?
Or will we probably NOT get more TAC just because we have a year round red Snapper season ?
I was just wondering if TPW could get more FEDERAL TAC if we closed the state waters during the OPEN federal waters season ?
Or maybe we matched the 2 fish fed season in state waters during the fed season.

TAC was divided up using past landing data. Doubtful the TAC will change, and overall horrible way to manage red snapper for REC fishermen. Would be the same as Specs and Reds caught in Florida having an effect on the limits in Texas.

Correct it was based on last couple of year's landings per everything I read. Not sure how they managed to estimate ours in TX....
My complaint is that last year's landings in no way is a way to determine how many fish can be removed from the ecosystem and still maintain a healthy population.
And increasing the destructive effects of by-catch from shrimp trawling can't possibly help. I think that one reason our snapper population has soared in the last few years is only partially due to the restrictive recreational federal season, it also has to do with the reduced shrimp trawling. It's my understanding that a fair number of licenses were bought out and some operations went under when the prices of fuel got so high.
Seems like there is no scientific basis to any of this. Just politics. :headknock :headknock

rant over.
