Talked with my mechanic and was told that they have had several outboard motors come in for knocking and guess what ? TOAST ! The ethanol levels were about 20% in the fuel and are only suppose to be around 10 % ?????Blown up motors. Huh, how does that happen ?? Well, something else to worry about besides $4.00 gallon fuel !!! THANKS OIL COMPANIES !! EAT ALL THE TROUT YOU CAN !!! @&%$#!-#&*holes. GOOD LUCK ANGLERS.

How is ethanol an oil company problem? Oil companies don't want ethanol in gas anymore than you or I do. It takes away a revenue stream from them and gives us an inferior product to put in our vehicles. Blame the Government for that one.

Too Tall you have a point. The government is the problem with this one. "You Tube" Ted Poe and look at his address about fluorescent light bulbs. I mean.....the government has a huge problem with immigration, national security, and many other sensitive topics....and they are worried about mandating that we buy light bulbs made in China. Ethanol....what a joke.

here ya go guys , at least its from my Mercury mfg on that subject when i asked about my motor.
-------------------------

Thank you for the recent inquiry regarding your Mercury 25hp EFI engine,
serial number 0R#####. We appreciate the opportunity to respond to your
question.

Your engine is designed to use fuel with up to 10% ethanol. Since ethanol
is an alcohol, if there is water present in your fuel tank it could
separate from the gasoline and mix with the water. If this happens you
would be running on fuel with a lower octane which could cause damage to
the engine. There is a section on our website that talks about ethanol.
The web address is
http://northamerica.mercurymarine.com/serviceandwarranty/outboardfaqs/ethanol.php

We hope this information was helpful. Should you have any other questions
or concerns, feel free to contact our office at 920-929-5040 between the
hours of 7:30am and 4:30pm, Monday though Friday, CST.

Sincerely,

Don't thank the Oil Companies. Thank your lobbiests from the corn producing states. And then thank congress for MANDATING that all gasoline contain at least 10% ethanol. The EPA forced this on us.

Ethanol is only added to all gasoline in DFW and Houston metroplex as an attempt to meet Ozone and smog inititives driven by EPA rules. If you drive far enough out of town you can get gas w/o ethanol. This EPA required ethanol blend is one reason gas costs more in Houston and provides less MPG. You lose $$ putting it in and then burning it and it's bad for outboards. Go figure the benefit - zip!

So mid- Grade doesn't have ethanol???

I thought it all did. If that's the case, that's a cheap solution, mid grade isn't much more expensive, so long as you're not going offshore, or have a really big motor (thank god for my 1979 70hp Evinrude two cycle, It's a cheap date)
Does anyone know if mid-grade gas contains any ethanol? I would start buying this for all my vehicles if this is true. My fuel milage has taken a nose dive since they started putting ethanol in gas.

Gee, everything I've read is that ethanol INCREASES smog so much that EPA had to grant California a special exemption because of ethanol use.

Nothing worse than a "professional" politician!

Those evil oil companies don't have anything to do with it, as stated earlier. Early primaries are held in Iowa. Iowa=corn farmers, so what do we promise corn farmers in order to get a lead in one of the earliest primary states? Yep, corn as food and fuel. We need to get Texas as the early primary state! Then politicians would be promising beef on every plate, more oil, and carry whatever you think will keep you safe! Oh, and thanks again Mr. Gore.

Not hardly, Charlie. If the gas pick-up tube is at the bottom of the tank, you may have put in 10% ethanol gas, but, as the ethanol separates out of the gas and sinks to the bottom, in time, your engine could be sucking up straight ethanol. Of course, before that happens, your engine has cratered.

If enough of us started writing our congresspersons it is remotely possible that there could be a marine waiver enacted.

One possible soulution...

I am going to check it out, but Sealy is just a few miles to the west, and I am pretty sure they sell fuel w/o ethenol. Prolly cant justify making the trip for your auto...but I am gonna fill outboard tank there, and fill a couple of 5 gal cans for outboard use only...plus a little stabil. For us smaller, older, outboard users, that live on the west side of Houston, might be a solution. Plus it would justify a trip to Fayette County lake for some eater catfish! LOL

I believe ethanol is in all gas in texas
The 1990 Clean Air Act requires oxygenates to be included in all gasoline blends. This can be ethanol, MTBE, or ETBE, but is not required up to 10%. The 10% ethanol requirement is special, specific requirment seperate from the CAA oxygen requirement.

In Houston I would imagine that the 10% ethanol rule applies to all grades. The advantage of the mid-grade is that you start off with a higher ocatane number. If you loose some ethanol out of the gasoline to free water in your tank, thus lowering your octane number, you still have a little bit of "wiggle room" before your octane rating gets too low for your motor. This agrees with Mercury's statement.

That would be my guess as to why people have more success (or less troubles I should say) with midgrade in their boats.

Thanks for the info, but...

I am still kind of hazy on if the gas in Sealy is better for an outboard or not? I am kinda old, and dont think I am computer savy enough to google it on my own LOL. Can anyone living in that area check it out? I was under the impression only the gas sold in Harris and surrounding counties had to have the 10% ethenol?

Thanks

To say that Ethanol is blowing up motors is more of someones own opinion verses documented facts. Ethanol won't lean out your motor or make your bearings go bad. It may in some cases contribute to fuel delivery problems but if you have an inline cannister type water/fuel separator like everyone "should have" this will not be a problem. But then again this is my opinion from having many boats and dealing with fuel problems in the past.
