please help. I have a 22 foot 1999 pathfinder with a tunnel hull. the engine is 2006 evinrude 225 etec 20" shaft. any time I run the boat over 5200 RPM with either jackplate up or down, and trim up or down it will trip the water overheat guage/alarm. and I just replaced both water impeller and thermostats. have viper 19" prop that runs WOT @ 5800 trimmed up at 46 mph, and trimmed down 5300 rpm at 43 mph. any ideas????

If only the impeller was changed I would definitely check the housing for heat damage. Sometimes the distortion could be extremely hard to see that is why I typically put an entire kit in when I change the impeller. Another possibility is could be the buildup of salt corrosion inside the water passages of the engine. Unless the engine is run up to operating temp while flushing the thermostats don't open so the flush will not completely remove the corrosion from the engine water passages, this acts like an insulating layer and the engine will be unable to cool at higher rpms. I like to remove the thermostats, put the covers on and with the lower unit removed hook a bilge pump to the water intake with a hose. I us a large bucket with a ten to one water to CLR mix and allow the bilge pump to pump water thru the engine from the water pickup above the lower unit for about 5 hours. Rinse with fresh water and reinstall all. This has worked when everything else I have done to rectify an overheat has failed. Make sure to properly dispose of the CLR when finished. Hope this helps... P.S. - I would not recommend modifying the overboard indicator.

First you need to have the engine hooked up to the Evinrude diagnostic software to see what kind of overheat condition that you have, there are 3 types - port cylinderhead, stb. cylinderhead, or EMM.

Being an '06 engine, there is also a service bulletin about overheating and it applies only to a certain serial number range. See your dealer to find out if yours is affected and if so, that it was complied with.

Regular water pump, blow off valve, thermostats, and EMM-VST cooling systems have to be serviced at regular intervals, depending on how you run the engine and in what types of conditions.

2006 225 etec over heating

I have a new water ibis with a 2006 225 etec on it. It has extremely low water pressure at idle speed and overheats if i go over 4000rpm. At 4000 rpm it turns about 10-12 psi. Just replaced the water pump and that didn't help. The etec dealer in south padre said it was the lightning gear case not taking the aerated water from the tunnel drive. What are my options for new gear case or anything else yall would think would work?

If you have low water pressure at idle, the gearcase intakes are submerged and that is not the problem at the moment. First the tech has to find out why the idle psi is not in the 3-5 range for a V6 E-TEC. There are one or two bulletins about overheating on those early motors, and are determined by serial number.
