Any chance hey were bouncing with large chunks of ice in the cooler or anything else hard that'd bruise the meat?

 

I sure don’t think so. It’s like an old clot. Almost black, not red.

True, and they are protected.

 

probably dolphin bites.... several times I've seen two dolphin
about 20 feet apart playing 'catch' with a flattie. One jumps
and flings the flounder.. the other comes out of the water just
in time to catch it in midair and then throw it back to the other..
back and forth...back and forth....really seems like a game with
them and never see any other fish involved except the flatties..

So help me, God.....LOL

 

I have seen them do this offshore with small grouper. It was pretty cool.

 

I’ve seen them hunting flounder and doing this many times when I’ve been wading. Seen them playing with trout this way, too. Like your own little Sea World show.

 

I dont believe these are the marks or spots he is talking about. He is talking about the black spots found in the meat itself. I always pop these out of the fillet before bagging them. I dont know exactly what these spots are but I see them occasionally.

It is black spot disease, caused by a flat worm. Supposedly not dangerous.

 

I threw out a big, fat trout last week that had around half dozen dark red spots scattered throughout the flesh. First time I'd ever seen something like that, but definitely subscribe to the 'when in doubt....' philosophy.

 

I have dug worms out of red fish meat before. The ones I pulled out looked like an tiny chicken egg with a tail. If you put it behind your thumb and forefinger and squeeze gently, a tiny little worm will pop out of the egg. It has 4 protrusions on the head, and will move around. The worm is about 2 mm...it’s a tiny tapeworm. Supposedly they die if you cook the meat, just don’t eat sushi
