I'm just curious,
How come there is no Cabela's in the Hou.-Gal. area? Why are the other two West & North of Houston and none on the Clearlake side of town?
How's business at Gander Mountain, since they have three stores fairly close together?
With Academy in the mix is anyone struggling in this market?

I have heard that there is supposed to be a Gander Mountain or Bass Pro off of HWY 288 and FM 518 in the near future. We were supposed to get an Academy but they pulled out in the buildup on the west end of Pearland. I would prefer the Academy myself.

I have shopped very little at Gander but have noticed that what I buy seems to be higher priced than Academy. I was in there yesterday and noticed that if you find a product priced cheaper than them at another retailer you get it for the competitors price minus the difference. I will now start finding cheaper prices on items and get them for even cheaper at Gander.

Interesting observation

Since there are multiple Gander Mountain employees who post here why don't you outline your complaints for them and let's see if they can be addressed. All three stores have employees who post regularly on this board.

There is a Gander Mountain by my house and they are horrible. Service is poor and the selection is no better than an Academy. I would not look forward to a Gander Mountain opening up.

I'm assuming you're talking about the one in Spring? Did you notice they charge more for the more popular Norton's? Not sure if Academy does this, never noticed. They do have Fish Bites though, can't say that for any of the Academy's I've been to. Academy is still my "go to" store.

Academy causes everyone in this market to struggle. Outsiders can't concieve of the power they have in this market.

Bah Humbug

Why is it I live by a town of over 60,000 and it resides on the water yet we cant get an Academy. WTH? It just irks me all day long that I have to drive 30 miles to go to Academy yet Im 5 minutes from the water in a pretty good sized town. SUCKS

Zac,
That is odd. My question is more about business and competition in this market, and how corporate picks locations, not whether you've had a bad shopping experience.
Clearlake/League City seems like a natural for a store.
Sowtrout that's what I was thinking, or maybe the market is saturated.

What about the Academy that used to be in Texas City.It was in a perfect location off 146. I used to frequent it quite often when returning or hitting West Bay and was really surprised when they decided to shutdown and not reopen a larger store in that general area.
I'd also heard that Cabela's was building here in the League City/ ClearLake area but as of the new Spring catalog it mentioned only 2 new stores... none were here.
As far as Gander Mtn goes, I like it. Better selections all the way around from tackle, hunting and outdoor wear. Plus more knowledgable employee's when it comes to fishing, but that's just my opinion.
I, like Kenny, don't see the big chains logic in areas to build. I-45 South must have a bad rap with the big chains or is it the smaller citie's just wanting too much in tax's and not giving good enough incentives to build that scare them off?

Zac, believe me, having an Academy 5 minutes from your house isn't alway's a good thing! $$$$$$$$$$

I've been to the Cabela's in Kansas City and I'd have to say, that if any thing should open, they should! That place was AMAZING!! We spent about 2 hours in the place looking around and we STILL did not get finished seeing all the stuff! Just huge! If you can't find it there then there is no sense looking any place else!

But I do have to agree with you guys. I used to live down in Clear Lake and the best they could do was Academy - not that it was bad, but you would expect, that if they were to open a place like BPS or Gander that of all places they would target first it would be Clear Lake! Makes you scratch you head for sure!

I noticed on a recent visit to Gander that they were charging in the neighborhood of a buck more per pack of Norton SE's than Academy. Hence, I only go there for specialty items that I can't find at Academy.

Texxan1, the place next to Fry's is going to be a new Academy. I think they are trying to open up something big and new before any of the others can come in and show them up. This may have something to do with the lack of the other stores. I'll be curious to see if it's anything different or just a new Academy. I'll bet it will be some sort of combination of all of them, could be really cool and I can't wait! Sorry Zac, but if they open one up over here in Baytown then I'll spend all of my work day there!

Gander will match any advertised price AND give you double the difference cash back on the first item.

Then why don't yall get them to price match and save more money. If Ya'll think a price is higher at gander than academy, tell them and theywill call academy or wherever and match their price and double the difference. I've done this before and they had no problem doing it. Nice people at gander and very more knowledgeable than any other stores I've been to.
