I have been in discussion with a few friends about this stuff called Berkley Gulp, wanted to get a few of the too coolers out here to share a few secrets on what type they use and why. Also how they fish it... and what results they have.

I fish them in just about every conceivable combination you can think of.....popping cork, trailer on spinner bait, straight jighead, I have even been known to the throw them in Potholes and let them sit. If I have someone on boat that can't fish plastics or doesn't want to chunk and wind all day, I will put them a gulp on, replaced all my live bait fishing

Swimming mullet

I have had luck with the jerk shad, but the 4" curly tails, or swimming mullet, in pearl white being first, red second, and rootbeer gold third, have have the best results for all three Trout, Reds, and Flounder. If wind is over 10mph use a cajun thunder popping cork and jerk the hell out of it about every 10-15 secs. reds and trout will hit, use a 1/4oz jig head and troll the bottom slowly for flounder. if this fails use the new penny or molten 3" shrimp and repeat all the above. water temp and clarity play a role and same plastics work work the same all the time. if its not windy, use a 1/16 oz or a 1/8 oz and retreive at different speeds until you get a hit.

Primarily..

I primarily use them any time I would throw a soft plastic. I have found them EXTREMELY effective for sight-casting, especially when reds/trout seem relunctant to hit a spoon. You can pitch them out in front of their path and just let it sit, or move it very little. A red passing over it will likely stop, turn around, and begin rooting around until he "gulps" it - even if it is buried in the grass/mud/sand.

That being said, I prefer to catch fish on "hard" baits - sometimes working soft plastics (or corkies) is much too slow when fish are scattered or I'm covering water to find fish. But once you find them, especially when wading, Gulps will catch them when nothing else will.

I have a friend who will throw out a rod and drag one behind the boat while we are drifting and tossing topwaters ahead of the drift. Just be sure to have the rod secured.

OH, I mostly fish the 5" Jerk Shad in New Penny, Peal/Glow, Sardine, or Nuclear Chicken.

They are without equal when rigged weedless fishing the mangroves for snook and snapper.

I'll 2nd wading_fool...really close to replacing my live bait days on the bay. I've even rigged a gulp jerk bait "wacky worm" style on a 1/16 oz jig head and caught trout, bunch of dinks but they were trout. Gulp rules or Gulps rule, however ya wann say it! :D

Pick you up an Enticer cork by Midcoast Products, about 2-3 ft. fluoro leader to a hook, no jig head and a 4" natural,or molting gulp shrimp. It is like trout cocaine. The other morning I was throwing topwaters for an hour without a single blowup and switched to the gulp and cork and started nailing them.
