Anchor Light Confusion?

Hey guys, I understand I need a 360 degree white light at night if I am anchored. Is that same light supposed to be lit up while under power? my boat is only 16' long. Besides the red/green navigation lights, should I have any other lights displayed if traveling after dark?

Navigation (red/green) and anchor light (white stern light) when running a in dark conditions. When you reach your spot and anchor you can turn off your navigation lights but be sure to leave your anchor light turned on.

Red, Green and all-around white light while underway and not at anchor. All-around white light while at anchor.

Your red and green nav lights have an arc of visibility of 112.5 degrees from the bow. So, if you don't have your white light on, a vessel approaching from your stern, or beyond the arc of visibility of your nav lights, then they can't see you.

Knowing the arcs of visibility of nav lights can also help a mariner determine the direction of travel of a vessel in the dark, just by their lights.

This is correct.

Navigation lights while under way, when Anchored Nav Light and rear 360
This is not.

I'm going to add something that I learned a few years ago: the all-round white light must be visible 360 degrees. This usually means mounting the light at the highest point on the vessel. Several years ago it became popular to mount the light on the engine cowling. If your console, grab bar, burn bar, tower, etc. is higher than the light on the cowling, then technically you are not in compliance with USCG regulations. I know its splitting hairs but I thought it was kinda interesting.

I know when we had our new Tran SVT built Donnie wouldn't put the light on the top of the outboard due to changes in the law.

I checked with the CG and they said that on older boats they won't ticket but on new builds if the light is on the top of the motor cowling and isn't the highest point on the boat they would write a ticket.

So I have a light on the top of my grab rail which is at 11'. I had to buy a light that will fold over to get it into my boat storage unit LOL...but by God you can see it for miles.

Lights

If a GW issues a ticket for a Nav light on your motor, you are either on his chit list or you’re just being a punk.

Game Warden May or may not But it’s within his right. As mentioned above I’d be more worried about the Coast Guard. Speaking of lights many new boats running lights are also in question regarding the rules.

Mine is mounted to the top, under $25

I built it from a 12" stainless fold down light and a piece of an old fiberglass antenna.

In the upright position it sits abbot 6" higher than my radar, and is the highest point on the boat

I'll try to find a better picture, in the picture below it is angled back for trailering, but I cut the 12" stainless extension that came with it just under the light and extended it with an old vhf antenna.

Replaced the standard festoon bulbs with LED festoon bulbs ordered off eBay, same color temperature and brightness as original bulbs

8 years later, still going strong

Mine is rigged per the diagram below, while underway red, green, homemade mast light forward bulb is on and stem navigation light on.

At anchor all lights off accept mast light with both front and rear bulb on

Activated with one 3 position toggle switch

All you need for labeling is "Nav / Off / Anchor"

Switch forward = Running

Switch middle position = off

Switch down position = anchor

On this subject but off a little, after guiding on the bays and gulf for over 17 years, the boat manufacturers place running lights (red & green) on side of console, and with 2 people or even one with open jacket or floppy shirt on it covers the lights. Most aluminum boats when on they get up on plane you can't see the lights because the bow is up too high. Please be careful out there, I mount running lights on double grab rails so not to block view.

Funny you should being that up as that's exactly what I told them at Mowdy. They informed me that they had just had the USCG guys come by and USCG guys said that these were OK mounted on the center console. I told the great people at Mowdy I disagree and told them exactly what you just stated and for this reason mine are mounted up high.

I wanna make sure ya see me coming for sure.
