Hey guys, has anyone completed an online course and received their Captain's license? I was looking into online options and seeing if anyone had any advice or has done it already. Thanks.

What Sgrem said. This type of information is difficult online. Another consideration is that your exams for an online course will be a proctored USCG process (random questions pulled from a USCG database). The local classes are allowed to administer the exams in their class.

It’s not hard either way, but if you do it in person you are there dedicated to the class and not being distracted. You can knock it out in 8 days.
And as others have said, they also focus on specifically what you need to pass the test vs filling your head with extra info.

They also walked us thru what all you needed to do to submit everything to the coast guard. And that’s harder than the actual class!

In person was great for me. As JKmoore03 said, the help completing the package of stuff that the coast guard requires was worth the cost. I also went back to my in person trainer when it was time to renew and he helped me with the renewal package as well.

I completed it online a couple of years ago through Mariners Learning Systems. They do prepare you well for the test.
After completing the course, you will need to sign up for a First Aid/ CPR class. When I took it the Coast Guard required you to take this in person. I took it at San Jac‘s maritime school.

Also did the Mariners Learning online. I was in no hurry, not trying to make a living fishing, just a personal goal. You can learn at your leisure, once you complete all the exercises and mini exams, then schedule the in person final. I would agree though, there was probably more stuff in the online than what was really necessary on the required final. Parts of the exam like chart navigation was easy to ace, but other areas may have lacked some emphasis. But, I also used a local training to help with the submission of documents, that is very helpful and specific.
