I have a .357 lever action rifle. It seems that the firing pin isn't hitting the bullet primer hard enought to fire a round. Is there anything I can do to trouble shoot this? Is there anyone in the Katy area that could work on my gun? I know Carter Country could fix it, but I hate giving those cocky sob's any business.

Gunsmiths

There are several fine gunsmiths in the Houston area. I'd recommend Ed Vandenberg here in Clear Lake (near Ellington Field). It sounds like you might have one of a few different problems. Either your firing pin is broken, the firing pin hole is gunked up, or the spring is messed up. It should be a cheap fix, regardless.

The 94 Marlin has a two piece firing pin. The rear section is spring loaded to misalign with the front section when the locking block is not all the way up. If the lever is bent slightly, the locking block will not go all the way up to where it needs to be when the lever is closed. Every thing will work as it should except the firing pin won't hit the primer.
The way to tell if the lever is bent, is look at where it goes into the bottom of the action in front of the trigger. If it goes up flush then the lever isn't bent. The levers generally bend in the part that loops around the trigger.

Also what kind of oil do you use on the rifle?

Good Gun

I have a 94 chambered in 357 also. I like it. Great little gun for climbing a tree and playing with the pigs up here. I loaned mine to a buddy who jammed it up trying to reload in a hurry chasing a wounded pig. He had only put 3 rounds in to start. I took it to James Shed's gunshop in Kennedale and he fixed it for 30$ bucks. It was jammed with shells in the mag. He short-jacked it being in a hurry. I thought he bent it trying to force it, but it turned out not being to bad a fix. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine. I have one chambered in 30-30 also that was my mothers hunting rifle that she killed I guess 50 deer with. I have taken lots of deer with it myself. I like the nostalgia of hunting with an open sight lever-action rifle for a change sometimes.
