Wife and I have a case of "upgradeitis" and can't decide whether we want to repower or look at a new boat. We currently have a 2008 Cape Horn Offshore 24 with twin E-tec 200's. We stopped by Ron Hoover Marine(not too impressed) in Rockport to look at the new Cape Horns and wow, $200K for a 31!? A bit out of our budget so repower it is.

Part of our wanting new engines is of course peace of mind with new engines/warranty but I'd also like a little bit more power to hopefully get a little higher cruise speed and not work the engines as hard.

We love the Cape Horn, just a fantastic hull and the E-tec's have been flawless, not a single problem at all since new. So we're looking at the new G2's but the new Mercury four strokes have also caught our eye. I sent an email to Chris's Marine in AP asking for a quote on a set of twins of the new Mercury engines in either 200 or 225 hp. last week but still not a word back from them.

I'd also like to get a quote on a pair of the new G2's, 200 HO's, what dealer would you guys recommend for Evinrude in Rockport/Aransas Pass?

If we went to the new 200 HO G2's we'd gain a total of about 234 lb on the transom. With the new Merc's we'd gain about 110 lbs. Not sure if that would make too much of a difference, I weigh 195 lbs and I've stood directly on the transom and it didn't do much of anything with the boat sitting still. I did read that the G2 weight is with the power steering included where as the Merc's isn't so that may make the weight gain a little closer between the two.

So in short I have a couple questions for the 2Cool brain trust;
1) Best Evinrude dealer in the AP/Rockport area you all would recommend?
2) I know the new Mercury engines are brand spanking new but I think they've done a lot of testing, however, I'm still concerned with a brand new engine with no history, thoughts?
3) The recommended max HP for our boat is 400 HP, I could get the G2 200 HO's and still be within those specs, with the Mercury if I got the 225's I'd be over, any thoughts on this?

I really appreciate your thoughts/advice. Thank you!

John

I have a similar sized boat with engines that weigh what you are wanting to upgrade into, E-TEC G1 200 HO's. I think it is too much weight on the transom.

I finally solved most of the porpoising with using a OFS4 prop. This prop provides the most stern lift of any prop on the market, but even then I think it still porpoises a little too much in 1-2's.

So what that I can hit 60 in the bay, running offshore even in 1' waves I am limited to 35-40 mph and slower than that in 1-2's.

I am planning on repowering next year and will try hard to get as much weight off my transom as possible, either with the merc 200 or merc 150. Also, while I have had Evinrude power on my last 2 boats, I would not buy them new. The resale value on 2 strokes is much lower than the other brands. The next used boat I buy will probably have Evinrudes for this reason, but if i am buying new I would want better resale.

The 10 yr warranty is appealing but I think they've dropped it down to 8 yrs now, still a good long warranty to have.

The boat is actually 25' 1" and as of now we have no issues of porpoising but that doesn't mean we won't with more weight on the back. If I recall the G1 E-tecs weigh around 420 lbs each dry, hard to get anything close to that now days. We're not looking for blinding top speed but would like a little higher cruise speed working the engines less as well.

As for resale, have already had two different people PM me about purchasing our E-tecs so not so sure at resale being a problem.

Thanks for the advice so far, much appreciated!

I think the v6 225s would be a winner. They weigh 475 so pretty close especially when you consider no carrying oil and the maintance is easy on new mercs. I think they’ll be a winner.

They do have good prices on them that's for sure! Thanks for the link.

They do seem like they're going to be killer engines. I wonder how they will compare to the V-8?

Even if I was in Port Isabel, I would take my boat to Ronnie at Redwing if I wanted new ETECs.
