Kid / Guest Rods & Reels

My kids are 8 & 10, and I've gotten them interested in fishing for specs and reds. Mostly from the boat, but I'm working on getting them in the water, but that's a subject for another day. They could really use some new setups. Both are using cheap spincast combos, and while they can cast and handle them, the drags are terrible, insides are starting to rust and I fear their days are numbered.

Was thinking about a couple of spinning setups that could also be used by guests not comfortable with baitcasts. Not wanting to waste money on repeat buys, I'm open to nicer setups than basic combos.

Also thought about foregoing the spinning altogether, and getting some better baitcasts with braking systems and decent rods. The slx dc looks like it might be an option, but a microchip concerns me, and they aren't inexpensive. Any other reels with braking/backlash prevention that works? I don't really want to spend my fishing days picking out birdnests for kids and guests. One benefit of this route is that it would add something to my very small collection that I could also use.

I know next to nothing about current model reels, regardless of type, and just browsing makes my head spin. Been using Calcuttas for 20+ years and like them because they are smooth and tough, a bantam something before that, and Ambassadors back to when I was a kid.

Thoughts?

Go inexpensive since they will likely get abused by both kids and guests?
Go nicer spinning and try not to have to do buy again in a year or 2?
Go nicer baitcast that demands that they learn?
Something else?

I know I've cast a wide net, just looking for a place to start.

TIA
