drum West bay on Fly??

I am completely new to the bay but would love to start catching redfish on fly. I have a 17ft skiff to pole around.

Not looking for your honey holes but just some advice on what launch to use and general areas to try and start learning at.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Guys!

reds on fly

I'[d suggest you seek out someone to get you started on what can be a steep learning curve. Huge fun, but can be frustrating. Finding reds in skinny water isn't difficult...Google Earth will show you protected flats in the area you want to fish. Good polarized glasses and a little practice and you'll start seeing them. You'll find they are a lot less likely to see you first and flee if you wade than stay in the boat and pole around looking for them. All that said, a guide is a bargain that will pay off big time. Or a friend with lots of experience. Good Luck!

Capt Scott Null is a fishing guide in POC who specializes in fly fishing for reds among other tactics and species. He grew up fishing the galveston bay system and started his guiding career on it. He has a poling skiff and even though he no longer guides in G Bay, I am sure if you contacted him he would come guide you for a day to show you around and some of his fly techniques. He may not, but I would def call him to find out.

You might consider contacting Rick's Flyfishing Adventures. He might have you go out in a kayak (no better way to go shallow). I learned a lot and caught some nice reds. At the time, he lived near Surfside and could probably fish West Bay as easily as Matagorda.

Check out Sweetwater lake. It can be very good at first light and dusk. Lots of tailers.

You should post in the fly fishing forum. It's lower down the main page.
