I found a boat I really like. It has a 250 HP Evinrude. Are they dependable?

tarpon ??

they all have problems, look at yamaha's list of problems. if it checks out good, just take care of it should be fine. i've never had anything other than johnson/evinrude going on 30 years now. i've had excellent luck with them but i take care of my stuff. i'm anti-4-stroke so either 2-stroke or count me out.

I like 2 stroke as well. The new outboards sometimes give you a choice as to the oil injection ratio.
On my 115 i had the choice between 50:1 oil set up or 100:1.
The ratio above is not oil to gas, but the weight of the synthetic oil. The injection can be set to either oil. If you use the 100 synthetic setting the motor runs very lean.
But using 100 oil with the setting at 50 oil will give it about 14% more oil in the mix than the 100 setting.
I have had two etec 115 the first was set at 100:1 and gave me 2k hours before the top bearings went bad.
The one I have now was set to the 50 weight oil ( using 100 weight oil) and at 795 hours is preforming much better than the last with that many hours.

Thanks for the info. I just got back from looking at the boat and will schedule a trial run in it next week. If it does well on the water I'll probably drag it home. Wish me luck. Oh, this is a 2017 Shallow Sport 24 Sport. The hull is in excellent shape and it looks to have been taken care of.

do yourself a big favor, after the test run, and you are convinced the boat belongs to you. run it over to a certified E-Tec mechanic and pay the extra $200.00 bucks, to have him do a compression test as well as a complete checkout.
