finally caught a flounder

after seeing all the flounder pics over the past month it was driving me crazy. the one thing i wasn't going to do was fight the crowd at swp. finally found one yesterday (17") near slp along with some trout (2 15" and a dink) and some rat reds on 1/4oz dsl.
for posterity.... last wknd hit upper west with a neighbor and we managed 6 keeper trout and some dinks over shell on the dsl.
2 weeks ago hit E Matty with same neighbor and his kid. worked some birds and boxed a few. then, after 23yrs of boating made a rookie mistake and ran outta gas and got towed by some good samaritans.
3 weeks ago popped a wade in lower west for dinks and rats.
last but not least, 4 weeks ago hit trinity for 1 dink under birds with a bay full of chocolate milk.

tough month but caught a few and got a flounder!

Did you set the hook immediately, or wait a count, or let it swim back to the bottom? There are a couple of thousand people on 2cool who want to know, LOL!

I prefer trout fishing over any of them, but flounder are fun!!! Nothing like feeling that dead weight on your rod then WHAM. We caught 2 limits of them a few days ago in west bay (of course the limit right now is 2 a person..)

Regarding what was said above, I wait 5-10 seconds! Everytime I set the hook as soon as I feel them I never hook them

haha too funny! i had already caught several trout and reds before the flounder hit so i guess subconsciously i figured it was another trout. so no, no special hook set technique. pure instinct

Another tally point for instant hook set.
As much as you fish West Bay I am surprised that it was your first flounder, as that bay is lousy with them.
So maybe your trout hookset is missing them?

i looked back thru my reports and it was one year and a month since i last caught a flounder. i did lose a few during that period though. yea maybe i do need to rethink the hookset thing. too focused on trout and reds

I waded in west bay just a few times with a young man who was deadly on trout with an arty. I would work an area well and think, well no trout here. Colton would wade up to check with me and catch five on the way with a top water. Have a stringer of stout trout behind him, lol!
One day we waded west bay close together and I saw a founder hit him several times and he took it away.
i told him those were flounder and to let it take it a bit, soon he was whacking them at every pothole we came across it seemed. Saying "this is the first time I've never caught flounder like this."
He is a good guy, he can't help it if he is a fish demon lol!!
He told me he usually got plenty, he just waited until dark and stabbed them in the back LOL!
