J hook/pass cavallo question

I haven't been over to the j hook in a few years just wondering if there is still a deep channel cut along the shore or did harvey fill it in. Used to love camping out on the j hook and fishing in that channel for sharks and reds. Thanks for the info

Do you mean on the inside or pass cavallo? ... not sure what side you're talking about.

If you haven't been to the J-Hook and Pass Cavallo recently be advised that it has changed dramatically in the past 24 months. Pretty much everything you knew about the area should be considered obsolete and highly-suspect. A careful explore/navigation expedition would be a good idea before trusting old knowledge.

Was in there last week and while Fish Pond seemed the same, the whole area outside was only about 1-2ft deep. There wasnt a gut that led over to Fish Pond,or at least I couldnt find it.

Where you are talking about is still there. Turn left before you get to the J Hook and you can run that shore line all the way to where you can park and walk to the beach.
You need to stay off the shoreline a little because it is shallow close in when you get a little farther away form the J Hook. Then when you get close to the area closest to the beach it gets a little shallow so poke along.

There is now an island and shallow area on your left for about half the distance to the dead end where you can park.

The J Hook itself is changed a bit but the deep water channel is still there at the J Hook and you can pull your boat right up to the shore.
That whole area has changed a lot in the last few years and just getting across Pass Cavallo from the J Hook can be a challenge. If you go on a day with pretty clear water you can see the deeper cuts , the sandbars come up pretty fast and it is easy to run aground in the pass.
The Google Earth images will give you an idea of the changes but it is no longer accurate.

I've got a few bread trails, and can never seem to get through there without dragging arce somewhere along the way. Got to be careful, but i'm normally early and no sunlight to see channel. It changes annually and a new bread trail is required with changes. I was dragging arce coming through San Luis a month back, trying to stay clear of the trouters on the bridge. All natural passes change regularly, one years bread trail may not be the next years breadtrail.

Troutsupport - Sunday Pass is still open but for how long? It is showing signs of silting and I can see the changes every time I'm there. I'd guess it's 25 to 30% of what Harvey created two years ago.
