It's like a PFD, it's made for a reason, safety!

No one is not required to wear a PFD on vessels under 26ft if they are over 18. However, it's smart to ware them. Wasn't there a police chief that drowned a couple weeks ago for not wearing one?

So we should pass a law that equips every car with a breathalyzer. Drinking and driving kills more people than not having a kill switch. Stop with all the stupid laws.

What's next? No wake after dark because it's safer, and that will save a few lives over the next decade?

Slippery slope, this erosion of freedom of choice. Bottom line, there are risks inherent in all outdoor activities -especially on the water- and the only way to eliminate the risks completely is to eliminate the activity.

I hear that staying on the couch is pretty safe. A quick visit to any Walmart indicates that a lot of folks have chosen that route. That's great for the cardiovascular professionals, too.

A kill switch doesn't really compare to a seatbelt. The person behind the wheel of a car not wearing a seat belt doesn't really effect the safety of the passengers or other vehicles on the road. Not wearing a kills switch puts the passengers and other people out on the water safety in jeopardy. I'm against too many laws and rules but this is one I can live with.

Didn't say you had to wear it, just inferred it was smart to do so. You choose!

I could not find any specific info in the article about whether is it a punishable offense to not use the kill switch? What the article says is all new boats shall have a kill switch. Personally, I haven't seen a tiller motor or a boat without one in years, but I have seen lots of people not use them.

Years ago, during a Troutmasters tournament in Rockport, a man was brought to the dock in critical condition. He had been ejected from his boat and run over by it. His back looked like a manatee with prop scars. The friend he had dropped off for a wade spent the night out on the water. It was bad for everyone.

I've also been on a boat when the steering cable broke. The guy operating the boat had a kill switch attached. None of us were thrown from the boat, but it was a stark reminder of the forces at play in a boat.

Use your kill switches people.
