Calcasieu Yesterday

The weathermen lied again. Early conditions were good. But quickly changed. Weir was open but the tide was to high for me to try and squeeze through. Strong incoming tide was a little to risky to try to get the Haynie into the marsh. Big Jacks reef were holding a few fish. Caught a couple of small trout and saw a couple of guide boats catch several. Then the winds began cranking and the water color turned to that of the Mississippi River. I am ready for several days with no wind!

Those dam weirs aren't very wide are they ? I had to lower the windshield also some times, but the marsh was worth it.

Where is Big Jack's reef? I suspect this is one of the man made reefs, but don't know which one.

We went through in a 25ft Haynie with a little room to spare lol. But they are a tight fit!

The boat pass at the Grand Bayou weir is 10 feet wide according to the refuge documentation. So if your boat has an 8 foot beam, all you have is 1 foot of wiggle room on each side of your boat. Not too bad when you are going against the current. You can ease up to the gate and slowly power through while keeping your boat centered. But when you are going with the current, you better be lined up perfectly with the gate. If your boat is on any kind of an angle to the gate, your stern is going to kiss the concrete. Particularly when there's a foot difference between the water levels on each side of the gate, which is common. It shoots you through and you have very little control over the speed.

Yep - Pucker factor can be huge going through the gate.
