Who Still Tags Billfish?

I used to fish offshore a lot back in the mid-90’s. Back then, putting an IGFA or TBF tag in a billfish was a big deal. I’ve now returned to Texas and have been fishing some and it appears now that nobody makes the effort to tag fish. Why is that? I do know that I’ve tagged probably 30-40 billfish in my life and not once have I gotten anything back saying my fish had been re-caught. Have fishermen just lost interest?

I’m sure those of you that still do tag fish will tell me it is alive and well, but I just don’t get a sense that is true anymore.

Tagging billfish is still a big deal and has actually expanded to swordfish and even yellowfin tuna... its especially big in CR/Panama/Florida.

I personally have tagged over 30 yellowfin tuna in Venice, LA and in Panama and had 2 tags already caught and returned.

MansfieldMaulers is a Landlubber (+10 to -10)
I had a kingfish tagged in Mansfield get caught in Panama City, FL and a Blue Marlin tagged in SPI get caught in Green Canyon. Both grew considerably. I still hear of tagging going on especially small billfish during tournaments.

I fished on the “Double Nickel” out of Quepos Costa Rica last year. They were recently recognized as the #1 tagging vessel in 2018 by Gray Research.

I practice the "kill em all -- let god sort it out method" but that's just me-- or as its known on the tourney circuit -- :we don't need no stinking tags"
A side note -- I also believe in the killing of seals( fargin no eared bastages) , the killing of dolphins(fargin dolphins), the killing of whales (fargin whales) ,and late term abortion(fargin unwanted babies) game farms (lets raise em so we can kill em-- fargin bastages) -- canned hunts (there dangerous-- kill em before they can go far-- or they hurt us) and -last but not least .. the hunting of less fortunate -- hell they dont matter.... kill em. So I invite you ruff neck-- join our club -- kill em!!! dont tag em--
I'm jk -- tagging alive and well of Texas coast-- Global warming got feesh in other locals and people there shooting with darts we track....

Yeah, we catch a ton of fish that have been tagged out here. Some of my guys tag fish, but we always run out of tags and then go for months without tagging. Would be easier if we were in Florida. I see tagging picking up here alot though. Nick on the Double Nickel did set the tagging record this year.

My opinion on the waning of billfish tagging some from trips to Costa Rica where we got on the sailfish bite as well as trips to the FADs. Not once did the crew attempt to tag any of the billfish we caught. Also, many boats fishing offshore Texas now have gotten into the light tackle and catching huge numbers of white marlin and sailfish but none of the boats I’ve fished on or Captains I’ve spoken to have any appetite to mess with the added complications of trying to tag a fish.

Oh yeah. Another reason is that these tournaments along the Texas coast used to give points for tag and release. Now, the only criteria is catch and release - regardless of whether the boat successfully tagged the fish or not.
