PV Report - 12/7

Just returned from a quick trip to Puerto Vallarta where I booked a 1.5 day charter targeting cow tuna on the Dhamar 2 with Danny Gomez and Dhamar Sportfishing out of La Cruz. Arrived at the marina at 4:45PM, and we headed out to smooth seas slow boating to the islands. We put out a couple lines and picked up two Sierra mackerel before we got out of the bay.

Arrived at the first island around 6AM and put out a couple of live baits on flylines to get the day started. Had a sailfish take one of the baits, but spit the hook before I could get it to the boat. Hooked up on the second bait, but whatever it was chewed through the leader.

Decided to move on to bigger and better things and started trolling for skipjacks. Loaded all 6 tuna tubes in about 20 min and sent them back in the water. Had our first hookup after an hour or so and was able to get the fish to the boat after about 30 min. We estimated it to be 220#.

Lines back in the water and another hookup, but this was definitely something different! It nearly spooled the 50W before breaching waaaay behind the boat - black Marlin that looked to be about 600#. We played catch up to get some line back on the reel before the tug of war started. The fish stayed deep and we traded line for about half an hour before the leader snapped.

Lines back out and we were hooked up with another tuna in no time! This one came to the boat much "easier" and hit the deck weighing right at 200#. We needed to pickup fresh bait so small gear went back out, Danny found a nice school and 3 rods were bent. At this point, my arms are dead and I'm struggling to get the bait in, but felt a bit relieved when I realized I had three skipjacks on the line 🙂

Loaded with fresh bait, 50W's went back out and had two reels screaming in no time. Unfortunately, we missed both of these bites and that would prove to be the end of the days action as time was running short. We got everything situated and pointed the boat back to La Cruz around 6PM.

What an incredible trip - one for the memories! Perfect conditions, great food, awesome company and my first cow tuna. I honestly can't say enough good things about Danny, Arturo and Danny Jr! These guys go out of their way to put you on the fish. Anyone looking for a charter out of PV should definitely look these guys up. I'll be back next year looking for more cows and that Marlin that got away!

Awesome fishing! All those opportunities and you got to fish on a BLACKFIN to boot!

Cheers

Strange - looks like fish pics are not displaying in my first post for some reason!
