Friday (11/16/2018): 25th Swordfish of 2018

We departed Surfside Marina at 6:30am on Friday with a crew of Brittany, Russell (my dad), Eli, Chris (WahooChaser), and myself. We were met with some of the nicest conditions we have seen all year. It was a little cold at the start but once we made it to the shelf and the sun came out it warmed up nicely.

Today’s goal was to catch our 24th and 25th swordfish for 2018. We made our first sword drop around 9am. We made several drifts and changed locations several time with no luck. The only love we had was small squid bites out of our bait. Around 3pm we decided to make one last drop before we left to go deep drop for the last hour of the day. As we were talking about pulling up to go on we got our first tap! Chris worked the bait up and down and finally she ate and we were tight! After 10 minutes we got the weight off and could see it was a keeper sized fish. She was an angry fish and fought like a fish twice her size. After putting on a great aerial show near the boat we sank a gaff in her. After a 25 minutes fight we put #24 in the boat!

We decided that there wasn’t time to go deep drop so we made one last hail mary swordfish drop. With in minutes of hitting the bottom we got tapped. This fish did not want to eat. We worked the bait up and down for over 5 minutes. We were all praying that I did a good job sewing the bait up with her beating on it 20-25 times. Finally the rod bowed over, the spool slipped hard and we were tight on #25! It was a quick fight and 10 minutes later we had our hands on the bill of #25! She was a legal sized fish but small. With one fish already in the box we tagged her and sent her back to the depths, alive and healthy.

We ran back to Surfside in beautiful weather and got to the marina as the sun set.

We want to thank all of our crew members and fellow captains for the help over this past year. Big thanks to Team Mahi and Mark Brackin, Captain of the Broad Daylight, for all of yalls help over the past year. We couldn’t have done it with out y’all!

2018 was a special year for us and we hope 2019 is even better. Tight lines and prayers for another weather window in 2018! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Very nicely done. I was wondering if you made it out on that last weather window. We may have one more this coming weekend, although not nearly as flat. Hopefully it isn't the last.

Best of luck to you in 2019...looking forward to seeing more swords, and hopefully learning a thing or two.

I have hand cranked them but I prefer our Kristal XL655’s. Almost all of our fish have come on our XL655’s. It’s a great reel with all the bells and whistles and we can sell you almost 2 of them for the cost of 1 LP. We pair the XL655 with our Check’n Bottom Daytime Swordfish rods. We will have all of the gear we use at the Check’n Bottom booth at the Houston Boat Show and the Houston Fishing show. Come by and see us! We would love to talk swordfishing and help get you started.
