Harvey's Continued Wrath: Much Of Rockport Will Not Be Rebuilt, Per Mayor
https://patch.com/texas/waco/s/g9a1z...-rebuilt-mayor

VICTORIA, TX — Rockport Mayor Charles "C.J." Wax said during a panel discussion Tuesday that much of his town will not be rebuilt after the devastation from Hurricane Harvey in August. Harvey slammed the small coastal fishing town as a powerful Category 4 storm, leveling many buildings and crippling the city's infrastructure.

Wax said Harvey destroyed about a third of the town, and that a large chunk of that will probably never be rebuilt. The mayor said 300 businesses out of the 1,300 in Rockport have reopened since Harvey came ashore in August, but up to 35 percent will never reopen. Wax said at a forum Tuesday in Victoria that as many people know Rockport as the city of trees, most were lost as crews removed nearly 800,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris.

Wax joined by three other local mayors of communities destroyed by Harvey in a discussion hosted by the Texas Tribune. Port Aransas Mayor Charles Bujan said 75 percent of the homes in the quaint tourist town were either severely damaged or destroyed.

According to the Texas Tribune, "Of Rockport’s 2,400 students, 856 have left the school district. Port Lavaca saw a storm surge of 10 to 12 feet. In Port Aransas, the tax base has shrunk from $2.9 billion to $1.6 billion. There was one fatality in Victoria. The statistics alone demonstrate the staggering damage that Harvey wrought on these coastal communities — and they show just how long it will take to rebuild."

I don't believe it. Given enough time, people will move back to the coast. They will build new, higher priced houses with a larger tax base. Now is the time to buy in Rockport.

This is very sad for me to hear. My wife and I love Rockport and seriously considered retiring there. We vacationed there 2-3 times a year for over 20 years. We have many fond memories.

Mayor has been throwing that 30%+ number around for several weeks now, know idea how they came up with that, everyone I know which is plenty in the area have been busy cleaning up and are in the process of planning to rebuild. Maybe it will clear out some of the riff raff that had made the middle coast home and liked to head out after midnight and steal anything left out. I hear they have 15 to 20 people locked up they caught looting but supposedly will let them off as they have no court system in place to prosecute them .

Businesses and residents of Rockport and other impacted areas are ready to rebuild and get on with their lives, but TWIA and other insurance carriers and adjusters are significantly delaying this process with their games...slow pay, non-responsiveness and intentionally underestimating construction costs.

Completely unacceptable....

I agree, it may take a few years, but people will come back, it's just a really cool place to be.

On Google Earth Pro, there are clear images of the town from a couple days after the storm. It's pretty easy to see the roofs and structures that were heavily damaged or destroyed, boats and marinas messed up, the trees denuded. The obvious damage is very widespread. It would have to be a little demoralizing to live and work in all that destruction. Places seem to bounce back after these bad storms, but its going to take a long time.
