Helicopter Hog Hunting

now legal: http://www.click2houston.com/news/28174751/detail.html

HOUSTON -- Local 2 Investigates is uncovering concerns about a new high-flying way Texans are hunting feral hogs. Veteran pilots and hunters said a new state law allowing people to shoot hogs from helicopters is raising serious safety questions and worries about accidents.

House Bill 716 | Feral Hog Info | Vertex Helicopters

Videos on YouTube and across the Internet show feral hogs running for their lives as hunters fire away from up above.

Right now, only state-permitted helicopter companies can legally hunt hogs from helicopters. But when Texas lawmakers passed a new law last month, it now allows anyone with a hunting license to hop in a helicopter, pay a fee, and start shooting hogs.

There's no doubt Texas needs the help to get rid of the nasty nuisance animals. Hogs are doing serious damage across the state, including in many counties just outside Houston.

Along with destroying yards and neighborhood fields, feral hogs are even more destructive when uprooting crops. Wildlife experts said there's more than 3 million hogs in Texas -- about half the entire U.S. hog population. State experts estimate feral hogs cause around $400 million in damage every year.

Hunting from helicopters is so much more effective than anything else, it's being called a necessity to getting rid of the hogs.

"We're getting 10 to 50 calls a day," said Mike Morgan, president and chief pilot at Vertex Helicopters in Houston.

The new law will mean big business to Vertex. So why is Morgan so worried about helicopter hunting across the state?

"'Joe Hunter' usually has no idea what he's doing shooting out of a helicopter," Morgan said from his company's headquarters at Hobby Airport. "Only after accidents do people start looking at causes and prevention."

Morgan is a military-trained pilot and firearms expert. Long before he'll allow a hog hunter to get in his helicopter, he or she will have to spend the day learning precise training on both firearm and helicopter safety. His Vertex team has been hog hunting for years. They are hired by Houston-area landowners and permitted by the state.

The new state law not only allows anyone to get in the shooting seat, it requires no training.

"For someone to just jump into a helicopter without any formal training is what we're looking at as a major safety concern," Morgan said.

If a pilot also is not experienced in aerial hunting, Morgan calls it a "worst-case combination." He said a Texas hog hunting helicopter recently crashed after hitting some low wires and another pilot reported his helicopter being shot. Morgan said without required training, there will be more accidents.

"If you just aim the weapon too high you could put a hole through the rotor blade," said Morgan. "Then a $500 trip turns into a major catastrophe."

Morgan said a misfire on certain weapons from the sky could send a round flying for miles and hitting almost anything on the ground.

KPRC reporter Robert Arnold spent a day going through training at Vertex. Later, he suited up and flew in a helicopter over a landowner's property in Chambers County. Robert could see tracks and trails left by hogs in the fields, but the early summer heat kept the hogs hidden during the late afternoon. He only shot at a target from the helicopter. Still, with all the banks and speed and turns, it is much different than shooting a gun on the ground, he said.

While helicopter hunting may be the best way to get rid of the ugly, mean pests terrorizing Texas, pilots like Morgan said it's only effective if it's done safely.

"It's not just us we're worried about," Morgan said. "It's everyone out there who's working with helicopters."

I don't think it's really "hog hunting" more like "hog eradication".
