Guide Photography Awards

We receive a number of requests weekly from our guests for copies of photographs of them during their stay with us here at the Lodge. Our management staff captures guest moments each evening during happy hour and at dinner, and again each morning at the boathouse as guests depart with the guides for their day on the water. But to close the gap on the full customer experience, we still needed to make sure we are covering photos of our guests while they’re actually fishing.

To help take advantage of photograph opportunities each day on the water, we launched an incentive-based program for the guides at the beginning of September, and thanks to the hard work of the guides it proved to be a great success. The guides provided close to 400 guest photos for the month – a wonderful achievement! The top three participating guides will be awarded each month, with September’s winners being Capt. Stephen Boriskie, Capt. Jeremy McClelland, and Capt. ‘Lil John Wyatt. Congratulations to the three of you, and thank you to all the guides for your everyday effort toward providing a memorable experience for our Bay Flats Lodge guests! – Chris and Deb Martin

October Starting Strong

by Capt. Stephen Boriskie

The mid coast water levels continue to be over the high mark, as I’m sure is the case with the rest of the Texas coast. This has made for some good fishing, especially with the redfish and black drum showing up in decent catches every day.

Lucky for us the weather has been consistent the past couple of weeks with morning and afternoon showers, as opposed to thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightening. This has assured me that we won’t be bothered too much by the weather, and we will be able to stick to the game plan most every day. My plan is to stick to the same regimen as all of September, which is deeper water over grass and sand while drifting with live bait. The trout and redfish are still solid enough to provide my guests with a good pull using live croaker. And there’s still plenty to talk about with the trout in the 20+ inch range, and the abundant number of slot redfish.

It’s still very warm around here with temps in the 90s, and water temps hovering around 85 degrees. Not much has changed since mid-August really, and all the usual suspects are still checking in such as lady fish, hard heads, gaff tops, pinfish, etc. It won’t be too long though for a total game change with the arrival of some over-promised cool fronts, you know where the temps will dip to 88 degrees!

Overall, my activity has remained strong, and guests are happy with nice boxes of both specks and reds. See you out on the water in October, and enjoy the coming changes both on land and in the air.

Randy Brown – Lodge Manager

Meals are important. Our bodies need sustenance, but that’s not the only reason we eat. Sitting at a table sharing a meal means something. First and foremost, it’s a sign of acceptance. We eat with those we accept, those we are in community with. Secondly, it’s an invitation to relationship. A meal is a chance to share time, conversation, feelings, news and all the other things that make us who we are, and it deepens the ties with those we are with.

Here at Bay Flats Lodge we put a great deal of emphasis on meals. Yes, the food is excellent, but providing the opportunity to share a meal with others is even more important. Our Great Room echoes with conversation, laughter and joy each night, which is truly the essence of meal time. Even early morning breakfast is full of human interaction!

So, let me encourage you to pay a bit more attention to your own meal times and the people you share them with. Listen more, share more, and laugh more in times of your own meals. And Bay Flats Lodge will be ready to welcome you so you can do the same here.

What Our Recent Guests Are Saying

Capt. Rudy Briseno was awesome! He had a great knowledge of area, of which baits to use, and he had an outgoing personality. His clean boat and equipment made the day perfect. For dinner we had huge pork chops and steaks, both of which were very flavorful - cooked just right! The Lodge is an awesome property, and everything was just great! - Adrian G. 10/2/19

From start to finish, it was all exceptional service! It was my first time doing anything like this, but it definitely won't be the last, especially with Bay Flats Lodge! I had a chance to fish with both Capt. Kevin Matula and Capt. Garrett Wygrys, and they were two of the best guides I have ever fished with! Both of them were very knowledgeable and friendly - could not of asked for better! From a food perspective, let's just say you will never go hungry! Some of the best meals ever - hands down! Amazing property and views! - Adam R. 10/2/19

My stay was excellent, and I will use the lodge again in the future! - Chris M. 10/1/19

Breakfast and lunch is just breakfast and lunch, but after a day of fishing followed by a nap, the anticipation of 5:30pm creeping up, and the appetizers are on the brain at this point - they were outstanding! The next thing coming is DINNER! You guys killed it with the dinners - I’m still stuffed! Good stuff, man! Keep up the good work, and I hope to see y'all again soon! - Chip E. 10/1/19

Capt. Doug Russell was bad-***! - Jordan R. 10/1/19

Thanks to the staff, from the the time of my arrival to the time of departure, everything went according to plan! Our guide, Capt. Cooper Hartmann, was terrific! He was ready to teach and guide us, but pretty much let us do our thing. His variety of music on the boat added to the experience! The staff and the food were exceptional, and the house was comfortable and the rooms were great! - Daniel S. 10/1/19
