Braid is so thin for its strength that I would use 30 # if using braid. Too small of diameter will cause dig-in into the spool and frustration.
While getting used to the new reel, I would use mono. I was late getting on the braid wagon, but if the right one it can be good.
It is easier to cast heavier weights/lures than light ones when getting the hang of a baitcaster.

Although there are some very high quality spinning reels made, I much prefer baitcasting.

Pretty much like SS and wbf said ..Or along same lines..Mono and or braid on heavier side..Simply heavier mono 12# 17# cost you on distance but help you learn Baitcasting ..less tangles and easier to untangle ...and its so user friendly Knots etc....Braid 30# is prob ok choice if you want it.But braid is not as user friendly..Harder to untangle/easier to tangle ..its not as KNOT friendly as Mono...and mo expensive...
When you get Baitcasting down to comfortable ...Then go to lighter line and or braid..if you want..

Braid is a hassle. Like the feel but as mentioned hard to tie, thread through a hook eye and knots very easy while jigging. I prefer mono. I like Ande

Start by adjusting the reel with the lure of choice tied on. Back off on spool tension until the lure itself starts to fall. Make short cast at first then let it fly if you don't backlash. Always rest that thumb on the spoon until you get use to it. If the reel has adj brakes read on how to set it up. Best is to fish with somebody that has and help get it dialed in.

The big game will not cost you much to spool the reel and then you can try other lines after you get the hang of the reel. Don't worry about using a low cost reel. They catch fish just as good as a high end reel. I use academy's h2o bait casters almost all the time. I can outcast most people with this reel. Paid $25 dollars back on a black friday special and still have a couple of them in the box. I have noticed on some of the combo's the rod is a little too stiff. May want to try a lite action rod to go along with this set up.

I think Matt can cast a feather with his baitcaster and still not backlash.

Got some big game mono 12 lb and 30 lb braided ordered. Will try the mono first. I've casted a few friends baitcasters and feel comfortable with them. Just need to learn the finesse. I would like to try Dennis's mepps technique which was the reason I bought it. Work my way up to shooting docks for bass and crappie!

Thanks for all the feedback!
