I love the power of the 2 stroke. I like the way they sound and generally are lighter.
The e-tecs run very smooth and quiet.

Find what you are happy with and go for it.

If you're putting it on a flats boat go light. Pay attention to weight and power .
I've watched over the years on here people drive themselves crazy inquiring about the shallowest of the shallowest of flats boats only to put a gigantic super heavy 4 stroke on the stern of a shoalwater and wonder why it nearly sinks the stern. They sit low and have a low sterns anyway and yet they put a concrete block on the back. I never understood that.
So think it through and go with what is functional for your type of fishing and what makes you happy.

Instant start on 225 Optimax too from 2008.

Same here..... 4 strokes are too gutless. Next rig will have an ETEC though. Learned my lesson with Mercury

I’m not sure what has happened with your merc. I have one as well with a few issues. Nothing major. But I can tell you plenty of people have problems with Etecs....

And newer four strokes aren’t really gutless. They are catching up pretty fast. Ever experience a SHO Trp combo?

I've been on them with Suzuki 4 strokes, Yamaha 4 strokes (not the SHO), and one time with a Honda. I'm not sure how anyone could possibly compare the hole shot of a fuel injected 2 stroke to the 4 strokes that I've been with.

The only exception is the Verado. Never been on a boat with one, but I know they're nothing nice..

And I'm sure ETEC's have had their issues.. All I know is the boat I grew up on was powered by a '97 Evinrude 225, and it never left us stranded all the way to selling the boat in 2015. The only issue my dad ever had out of it since ownership in 1997 was a fuel pump one time. Not one single issue whatsoever since then.

So that's why I'm partial to Evinrude really. I grew up with one and I know it worked. This is our first Merc, and both of us learned our lesson. My dad tells me 7 days a week, if he could track down the dude that bought that Stratos he'd offer to swap him that Evinrude for the Optimax LOL

Don't get me a wrong, the Optimax is a beast as far as power goes. It had that Evinrude beat on hole shot and overall power. But reliability is another thing. And from my own research, the Optimax seems to get 50/50 on peoples thoughts about them.

If the gas isnt old, fill it with E0 and run it. Dont worry about that little bit of oil in there. Wont hurt a thing.
