south shoreline west bay

with the forecast of fog, i cknd' out on taking the boat yesterday and opted to walk in 7am-9;30. pea soup at sunup, cleared to 1/2mi by 8am then rolled back in around 9. threw 1/8oz dsl and got a 15" puppy drum, a few dink trout, 16" trout, and 2 14" sandy/gulf/silver trout (i cant tell the difference but they're gonna make nice ceviche this afternoon). hadnt caught one of those in a while but i remember pound for pound they fight harder than their spec'ld cousins. i hope they all had good seasons, but gotta say i wont miss the duck hunters after next wknd

Erie mornings out lately with that super fog.
I have been out the last few days when I have to stop because I can't see the bow of the boat.
Catching fish and wading in the water with them, that's how to start the day.

i've gotten to where i don't feel like screwin' around with fog in the boat at all. had a few trips in years past that after finding your spot with just your instinct, compass, map, etc, you felt a sense of accomplishment. but for me it's just not fun anymore

tarpon GPS

With GPS life is easier, just need to move very very slow and once there, stay put. Good idea to have a handheld as well, so when wading to find your way back to the boat, if on a big flat like behind the pass. I've found myself trying to find the boat in the fog, not fun.

I wish there was a split in the duck season. Most of my favorite non bayou spots are in areas that almost always have duck hunters.

I use the GPS and this time of year there are almost no boats on Livingston. Still I go easy and creep when I need to. If the fog makes the GPS get hinky it's time to just stop for a while.
I don't think I would attempt to navigate the bay in soup fog.
