Sandbar shark. They have that copper/bronze coloring. And they are protected.

true that is a sandbar. Any shark that has an interdorsal ridge like the one in the picture is protected...see the raised ridge between dorsal fin and last fin before tail...nice one ...bet it was fun to catch!

Here is a cool link to a shark ID video ( where I learned about the ridge). You have to watch this thing to get a shark retention endorsement on Highly Migratory Species permit for a boat

That's a small dorsal for a sandbar but looks like one to me, nice catch.

Thanks for the follow up and education. I only use circle hooks with mono leaders in order to release all sharks jewelry free. Still struggle on the Id side of things. I’d didn’t appreciate the interdorsal ridge but will look for it in the future.

To me it looks like the pectorals insert before the dorsal fin starts sloping up. Here are a few more pics.

Looks like mating battle wounds on the body or did it get caught up in the leader?

Not sure on the wounds. Closer than the end of the leader but could have been the mono tag end or the free sliding weight if the shark got tangled in the leader. the wound didn’t look “fresh” so I’m not sure.
