Sometimes. In a kayak, redfish can often start to feel the kayak out at 25-30’, but sometimes they will literally swim right into it unaware. Wading can be good, it’s just hard to wade some places with mud and shell. When they are schooled up in the shallows chasing bait is a good time to get real close, they seem less wary. If you can get one on the edge without busting up the school, that’s good. The school will often reform to be chased once more even if they get spooked some by the eat and the subsequent battle.

This is getting to be the prime time of the year for shallow water redfish hunts, fly gear or otherwise.

To me it seems like drum either all will eat or none will eat. They have a meeting before the sun comes up to determine if they're going to eat flies that day.

awesome man!

one thing I picked up on a recent sight casting trip with Capt. Nathan Beabout that I was doing right (for a change!) was to let the fish run out of the school so as to spook the school less. My buddy would hook up and immediately start fighting the fish.. he told him to let them run like I am doing away from the school.

Fly's are definitely great when the reds start eating 1/2 inch shrimp in the grass... good stuff.
