Looking back at my fishing logs, I see where I got 6 trout between 16-21" October 15th, 2010 in the Surfside surf, all on a Catch 2000. The day before, I got one keeper trout.
December 2, 2010 I got one 20" trout on a Bone /Chartreuse/holographic Skitterwalk. Doesn't appear I fished beyond August since then except September 12th, 2016 when I noted 7 small trout. Can't catch them if you don't go. Usually, I'm in the bay, marsh or river by October. |

I wouldn't refer to it as leaving, unless you're talking about getting out of casting range of a human standing in the surf. Maybe it's shift.
They'll move out deeper and, in the case of surf near jetties, they move to the jetties, following the bait, and where there is deeper water to hide from the cold of winter 30 feet from the rocks. If you can find time and good conditions during the winter, just go have a try at the Surfside Jetty |
