West Bay/Bastrop Bay Reefs

Our family has fished Rockport for years and typically does really well on the deep reefs for trout this time of year. This year, we’re headed to Jamaica Beach as Rockport continues to rebuild from the hurricane.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for some good deep reefs or structure to target for trout? I’d like to take my wife and sister out on the falling tide Thursday afternoon/evening with croakers. My wife has never been out before, so it would be really special to get her on some fish. Which by the way, can you even get croakers around there? Really appreciate any guidance you can provide!

You can get croakers at Captain Mark's Bastrop Marina or West End Marina. Most folks fish the guts in the pass/behind Bird Island, Cold Pass etc. I don't know about deep but believe me theres plenty of shell in Bastrop. If your not careful your lower unit will find it for you. If you need a recommendation for a guide pm me or call Captain Mark's. Good luck, enjoy yourselves, and be sure to stop by The Sandbar at the West End for some good food and a cold beer.

Some more structure to consider: you can fish the pilings at the pass. Also, there's a sunken shrimp boat behind the pass. You still see the rigging. You might also scope out Chocolate for some deeper shell.

yes I would check out the reefs in Bastrop but do not spend all day fishing them. you can pick up a couple if you move around out there fast. get a trout or two, maybe a couple reds and move on. the key to fishing that area[ Bastrop, chocolate, Christmas area is to keep moving and building the box. they add up.

If coming from Christmas and following the channel north, when you get to house that is on a shell bank turn left and go back towards oil field cut. I don't know the name of the reef but it will be south when going west and it is marked well and also will show on your gps imagery. It's pretty big and usually 4-5' on the edges. Usually pull some trout and a red from there.

I would wait until fall before I focused on those areas.. they were all fresh even 1 month ago.. I'd hit the pass and some shell areas in west.

You can get you bait at See Isle. Not far from Jamaica. Fish the North end of the Pass. Waist deep to to knee deep. Best to fish a incoming tide there. Earlier the better. Don't be afraid to fish shallow. Top waters & Trout Support lures have been working for me.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Sounds like a good suggestion going deep, but was having trouble tracking that spot on the map.

While I’d love to wade, I’m trying to make this an “easy” trip for my wife and just keep us in the boat.

Looks like Carancua Reef, Shell Island, and Confederate Reefs may be my best bets given the circumstances. I’ll keep in mind to take the reef hopping approach. Seems like there may be a couple more reefs farther south in West Bay too but can’t find a good map for them. Also, by the pass, you’re referring to San Luis, correct?
