If you could have two boats for fishing out of port aransas...budget 150k
Looking for help in determination of favorite boat recommendations for the Port A area. I've got two boat slips with lifts, (4500# and 7500#). A couple of littles 9&10. Been doing the research online but haven't been out on the boats but I am sure some members of this forum have...Budget is around 150k...so that is either one really nice boat or a couple of smaller ones. Initially, I was steered toward a shallowsport X3. Has anybody taken one out to the rigs on a good day? This would be my inshore, everyday boat with an occasional run offshore to fish. Then I started going down the rabbit hole and looked at an scb24 for inshore (not taking it offshore). Next in the thought process was to get a transport baby cat for the inshore fishing with the kids/crabbing , etc and a sea hunt, robalo, pathfinder, etc. for the main bay fishing etc. So....the direct question would be if you needed/wanted to fill two slips with two different boats, which ones would you pick...or if you wanted to save/spend it all on just one..what would it be for the port aransas area? I completely get that boats are a lot like trucks with brand loyalty etc. but I don't have any preconceived notions as I haven't been on any of them. Hoping some of you have and are willing to share the good, the bad, and the ugly of your experiences and what you would get it you had your wish list. Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice.

Have you budgeted for maintenance, insurance, incidentals, equipment on both boats? Things like GPS database subscriptions, etc. (if applicable) as well may be double the cost.
Of course with 2 boats, when one is down for maintenance you could use the other... |

18-21ft cat of some type. A shoalwater is my first instinct. Maybe a HAYNIE cat if you can find one cheaper.
A 26ft world cat for offshore. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My budget wasn't any where near 150k, so I can't tell you about those boats, but I have two boats and would rather split my budget 2 than one any day.
I have a 16' prodigy (custom flat bottom aluminum) with a hopped up tiller to run the refuges to duck hunt and get in the real shallow stuff to wade fish. It's my favorite. And a full foam cape horn bay boat that can get into deeper marshes ok, run the jetties, and go offshore on good days, the higher gunnels make it way less nerve racking to take my young kids out as well. @williamsericl does have a point about maintenance, but if I'm doing something to one boat I can always use the other. Plus there isn't one boat to rule them all, they are all good at different things. Wouldn't do it any other way. Unless 3 boats.... LOL |

If I were in that area, I would have something like a ShallowSport 24 Mod-V or Haynie Bigfoot and use the rest of the budget wearing it out. The Mod-V or Bigfoot would make an ice cream run offshore and floats/runs plenty shallow to go almost anywhere you would want to go.
The down side is they are both pretty slow because of high water drag. The SS will be a much nicer boat and have really good resale but comes at a higher premium initially. The Haynie is well built and a very functional rig as well, just not as nice. |

My choices would be a Black Jack 224 and Shallow Sport Classic 24. I would have to buy used to stay within your budget. The Black Jack will do anything except go super skinny. A buddy has one and it seems much bigger than 22 feet. I'd use the SS to get shallow. Good luck with your search!

I have 24vx Kenner and a 16' shoalwater. 16 is a little small for more than two people so I'd definitely get something slightly bigger. Kenner is a great boat for most purposes with the exception of shallow flats.

Idk, maybe a 24' Pathfinder, and a 23' Shoalwater Cat, you should be right at 150k for the 2.
